Well sounds like he's a jerk but I know nothing of the situation. Sounds like something is bothering him and you mneed to talk.
He may indeed be a jerk, but his recovery is not the one you are concerned about. There will continue to be difficult people in life, almost every day, who will be passive-aggressive and attempt to have power struggles and even to mess you up or make you look bad. You can choose to either do the same as them - engaging in this tit for tat kind of junior high behavior, or not. It does not mean you have to put up with bad behavior. You will feel better about yourself and be better at dealing with these kinds of folks in the future, if you can find a way to declare a truce while you must tolerate each other for your shifts. If each of you is always playing a sort of 'get-back' strategy it will likely become more and more miserable each time you must work together. You might be able to find a way to ask daryl for a truce, to agree to even dislike each other if you must, but to do your best to get through the shifts together so that you don't go home fuming, ready to kick your pets.
As far as the name calling, it just means he lacks a rich, varied, vocabulary. (This support group quote seems appropriate here: What other people think of me is none of my business.) Compared to the Hell you have gone through with compulsive gambling this guy is just a little fly in the ointment. Hang in there, Hugs and Prayers.
