Baby's First Birthday!!

Ok, this is kind of crazy. When Marlow was four months and people asked me what I wanted to do for her first birthday I would reply 'nothing fancy, just a bbq and a few friends.'

Now Marlow is ten months, and I feel an enormous amount of pressure to make her first birthday special.  Not from an outside source, I'm pressuring myself!  I feel like this is so important....that she will never have another first birthday, and that this signifies the beginning of the growing up and leaving mommy behind.  She's only going to be one for crying out loud!  But it makes me panicky!

I thought about maybe finger painting for the party.  We have a chainlink fence and I thought if I could get some zip ties, some cardboard, some paper and some paints I could work it out.  Attatch the paper to the cardboard(I could make boxes into four squares, then zip tie them to the fence at different heights.  Get the parents to dress their kids in either old clothes or bring a t-shirt for over top.  But does that seem extravegant?  I think it may.

And to make it worse, Joey doesn't think it's anything worth celebrating and he will make a big deal out of any money I spend!  I already booked a cake in with a proffesional decorator.  I got this lady to make me a cake for Joey's birthday and she did great work for really cheap.  So I booked in since she was filling up fast for the summer, but I have NO IDEA what to ask the lady to do for the cake.

I don't understand where these feelings are coming from.  In both of our families birthday's are often not even acknowledged.  Kids do not get birthday party's and adults do not get cakes and gifts.  When I threw Joey a suprise party in May they didn't even want to come!!  Marlow will be getting birthday party's, and I made this clear to them.  I am not sacrificing an important part of my daughters life because they don't like party's.

Maybe I feel the need to have a great party just to show them up?

I also thought of just having kiddy pools, and sprinklers, and bubbles, and balls, and sidewalk chalk set out so that each kid could choose what to do for fun.  Maybe set up a small finger painting place for the older kids.  The kids will range from 0 to 8.

Also, ugh, Joey's nephew's birthday is Aug.22 and Mar's is Aug.20.  The 21st is a Saturday so I booked the cake for then and I will plan the party for then.   My MIL made a big fuss that I would book Marlows birthday on the same weekend as Austins.  They don't do party's anyways!  And they will always have birthday's on basically the same weekend.  Am I really all that wrong to do it this way?  And then Joey suggested joining them....but its Marlow's first birthday....I sort of want it to be just for her, not for her and an 8 year old who will have NOTHING in common.
