Asking for State Help Humiliating Experience!

I have been unemployed for over a year now, and my twice extended unemployment benefits will be running out in about 2 months.  I am saving every penny I can, but I expect to run out of money for rent by mid-winter.  I seem to be "falling through the cracks" in every way; I'm 60, and need to be 62 or disabled (which I am not) in order to be able to move into an "elderly" building where I would pay 1/3 of my income for rent, be eligible for food stamps, etc.  So, the question is, if I don't get a job soon, what happens to me?  I called a couple of places - Dept. of Human Services, Portland Housing Authority, and a Seniors help line, hoping for some answers, or at least some suggestions of what to do.  The seniors line lady was very sympathetic and sorry she could not help me, though she did suggest I try a couple of other places.  On the other hand, the DHS and Portland Housing offices were very rude, sarcastic, and scolding in their attitudes.  They basically treated me as some kind of scam artist, and it was very hard for me to explain that I have WORKED all my life, and now find myself begging for charity!  I even found myself almost crying and informing them that since I am recently widowed, this is even harder, doing all this by myself.  Their attitude was basically, "who cares?  drop dead!"I am trying to annalyze this reaction and all I can think of is two things:  First, the people I dealt with have never been poor and have NO CLUE what it is like!  Second, they got hostile when I asked questions; it was as if they had a script prepared and when I asked stuff that was not in the script, they lost it and did not know what to say to  me.  I am so ANGRY right now!  I'm angry at  these people, I'm angry at my last employer for eliminating job, I'm angry at a society where you are treated like garbage if you don't fit neatly into a little slot........Too bad Brett in UK seems to have left this site - know he would get what I am saying........Anyway, the best I have been told is that if and when I get to the end of my money and am homeless, I can go downtown and apply for "General Assistance" along with the voluntarily homless such as the druggies, transients, etc.  I really wish I did not have a religion that forbids suicide - it's beginning to look like a good option.......Sure wish my faith was stronger.  I know God can get me out of this, but it doesn't seem as if He wants to.  What is wrong with this picture?  I am just so ANGRY, ANGRY, ANGRY!!!!!!
