just food for discussion...
last night, i came back to my room after a busy evening and I really needed some outlet, some thing to give me pleasure.
I wondered about what things people do, to help give themselves pleasure at the end of the day - like outside of taking care of life,
personal admin and work etc....there’s so little to do here outside of the monastery and quite frankly, I’m almost always battling my mind and so when I come back to my room with Blue, I don't always have that sorted out for myself. I'd want something cozy and comfortable to do. I’m thinking of starting to research something in order to collect it and enjoy it. Watching shows on PBS passport does next to nothing for me anymore. I might also see about meetup.com too.
I’m reminded of my Aunt's near ritual of having her scotch every night and watching the news. That's one thing she makes non- negotiable - it's her daily treat and at 93, she's still going strong. (She just organized a 'solos dinner' for New Year's eve!)
Last time we played ping pong she beat me...no lie - she still plays tennis too! I thought of buying a crystal scotch set lol
two cut crystal tumblers and a cut crystal carafe to have scotch with once in a while....indubitably fun, mellow and civilized :).
Probably not the best for my mental health and for the meds cocktail i take.
I need something like that, pure unassociated with anything too serious to help recharge my batteries.
I've also realized I need to ask myself ‘what am I ok with myself doing?’
When younger I used to care what people thought way too much and just looking at myself and my life I am ok with some people
maybe aren’t meant to have big exciting lives. So I’m living within my means and focusing on good health and my world of responsibilities and community, and Blue very much too.
I think everyone might ask themselves this question. I've gone from very much seeing myself as an image of a lone soldier holding down the fort
somewhere in north africa in a long ago war being that last one keeping vigiligant, to really addressing the issue with more examination.
I've also come to think about this question because of the lessons we discuss here at the monastery. The outside world they assert
is a place to live for vanities (which is bullsh*t but bear with me) and the outside world as a place where social boundaries
are defined by our passions. Just the thinking about this I've found something that gives me pleasure and I know I can keep
'in check' mentally and emotionally and where I am going with it - and what I am doing 'at it' as I create it...(like with my writing)
I'm in touch at times with the thought
of wishing I could contribute something or build something big in society - like have kids and make a family - but my version has comes in a different form - for that matter everyone has their own version, some fundamental similar stuff and some different. I very much want to contribute manifestly but for now living solo with Blue
and taking care of my noggin' is what my cards are....I think I've got two pairs....eventually I'll have a flush too! :)
Things are good. Just came from conducting a long Christmas service for the first time.
Merry Orthodox Christmas!
