Agency - Anxiety and Avoiding Comparisons

Thinking about the ideas of taking care of all you're supposed to do, whether it's in your personal life at home or

in my community of friends and family. When it comes down to being on my own at times

or more likely, more specifically, when I lay my head down to sleep I've a lot of anxiety.

I  do feel agency to create my own path - but I also am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

guarded about it! I know when we make personal choices of a livelihood or vocation - there's no one size

fits all - and comparing doesn't make sense - you will make your own version of the life or the profession you pursue -

you make your own version of it ! So I guess that being said I think life is just about having anxiety in it..and

managing it as best you can.

There's all sorts of worries to go round. Will I make rent, cover bills, keep a tidy home,

do a good job at work, save money, be good to my family and friends... I guess we all need to check in with all

that stuff on a daily basis but the anxiousness or maybe the alertness to that....... clouds the path? or the life?

I feel grasshopper is asking a question here.. :-)

Again maybe as I live alone I have to answer questions that would be automatically answered in couplehood.

Got to be radical and try new things.

I also heard one guy talk about his choices in life as being oriented to 'the other' by engendering in his mind's eye

his sense of his own example he was setting to young people who we see in his achievement the persistence and dedication it motivated him to show them that he

walked one step at a time down the road of experience and achievement. So with that he was saying "You could do it too"

I also heard another fellow talk about his life was in orientation to the other through helping immigrants and refugees.

I don't know, I guess that's all a personal choice - but I bet a lot of it is really gratifying and helps you sleep at night.

Part of me wants success...but what does that mean to me? :)

Sounds like your last sentence could be worked into part of your mission statement….

Couplehood automatically answers questions? I've been married 41 years. Where are my automated answers? I bet I'd still question those automated answers, but still. . . I've paid my dues. Where are my automated blues? Well? ? ? Now that I think on it, I guess I do have some of those automated blues. Which direction is the love of my life headed today? Can we *just* pick one and make it work? Why does life have to be so messy and unpredictable?

I'll second the notion that anxiety is an all-natural and even beneficial piece of the human condition, whatever the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Don't cure it. Train it. Learn how to use its beneficial properties, such as awareness and compassion.

There are some times when anxiety can be beneficial like the flight or fight response. I have a generalized anxiety disorder with my bipolar. On my pdoc's suggestion I started taking 400mg Magnesium daily for anxiety. It took 3-4 months, but I started having less and less anxiety. I really don't know for sure if that is what helped me, but now I have very little anxiety and I can handle that. You might want to talk to your pdoc about it and see if s/he thinks it's a good idea or not. It doesn't interact badly with any of my other meds, which are a lot, and I never had any side effects with it.
