affirmation, the unbearable lightness of being and taking care

The past couple, few days - I have really seen the power of affirmation within me.

I can get so caught up in affirmations from the external world (from my therapist, from my friends and family,

from the monastics) - and then when

I try to be strong within myself -I try and set myself apart -and I find that I become caught up in affirming myself

in the sense of giving myself what I need and trying not to rely on anyone and so creating distance.

I thought about those two things today - with a kind of clarity -- and the hard part is - something that has taken

me a long time to do and realize ...and that is ...to live with both.

here I am now, at the end of the day at the monastery. I did a lot of hard work for the campers

and monastics. I find myself appreciating a birthday gift I was sent and received today...a nice scented candle, and a black shirt

(monastic wardrobe!). Just the niceness of having received that, doing my laundry so that tomorrow (my birthday)

is a good fresh start for my Heinz Variety Year (57.) There's such a lightness to just enjoying these niceties

and there's nothing wrong with that... I find myself realizing that I often look for some great life achievement

that I could, would or should have a feeling to legitimize or vindicate my existence. But I think I'm finding

that life is just what I started to talk about at the outset of this paragraph (lightness) and then some.

So taking care of my life - and enjoying the nice moments and things that add sweetness to my day.

I feel like I understand now. I never had children or married -

my life is going to be about taking

care and making room for things that make me feel good. Like friends and family - and also those

little material things that pick me up or cheer me up along the way.  :-)

Happy early birthday Markus. Another journey around the sun and more accrued wisdoms are a gift.

It is a really complicated world that will not get any simpler. You do a good job of navigating it even if you don’t always feel strong. Know that you are not alone in the endless navigation. Happy birthday, mon ami.

this entry pulled an interesting thread out of the psycho snot knots between my ears. this book hit the u.s. hit parade in 1984 while i was pregnant with the second child of my first family. i was assimilating the harsh realities of the children and marriage you are feeling deprived of. those harsh realities were solidly in the way of keeping up with all the latest books being discussed in the high brow circles i scarcely had time to attend. i still haven't read the book and feel a bit like i failed that final exam. not a one of those high brow associates are still in my life. i still feel like i wanna read the book.

is there a reason each of us ended up in the life the other coveted? i theorate that there are extensive lists of reasons, but i feel an incredible lightness of being when i can let that mystery be and simply participate in the life god gave me. why ask why? we is what we is and we isn't what we isn't.

It's Friday now so Happy Birthday(again, I said it on the morning post too). I hope you have a wonderful day. 57! You are still so young! 11 years younger than me. Enjoy it. Getting older is nice. You no longer have to worry about what people think about you and you can better express yourself because of all that wisdom you have attained during your life. It only gets better..

I think what I’m learning is that, in California and in my family specifically there are different things that they affirm than here. Some of it is that there is no affirmation but connection over all. It’s really taught me. I feel like the boy in Captain’s Courageous.

I think what I also know is that certain things can be affirmed in a child or adult but if it’s too extreme that doesn’t bespeak survival or making our way in the world then….not healthy…
