A letter to dad...

Dear Dad,
It’s been so many years since I last saw you. I miss you every day.
Do you miss me too?
I often tell my boys of the family adventures we had when I was young.
Do you even know I have 3 sons now?
I am sure you remember my first born and the day you pressed his tiny newborn feet
into the cool wet cement of the sidewalk you were building on that sunny spring morning,
as he cried his precious infant wailing’s.
You held him so gently with your strong workingman hands.
Do you remember that day dad?
Somewhere in a box tucked away for safe keeping,
I have a photo of this moment,
one of the few in existence of you holding your grandson.
Thirty years have passed us by like a runaway train down a lonely stretch of track
since that spring long ago. He is a grown workingman too now.
Did you know he has babes of his own?
His brothers are strong, tall, and healthy young men as well.
All 3 have hearts the size of Texas made of the finest gold. You would be proud,
to call them your grandsons.
I tell them about you all the time and I wish they could meet you.
But then, I guess one day they will.
I have tried to instill in them all the things you taught me so many years ago.
Things like how to be strong and determined, to not let the trespasses of others taint our spirit,
and to be nice to their mother.
I remember you told me once, that mom was right even if she was wrong!
I never understood that till I had children of my own,
but now it makes so much sense.
I told my boys for many years how I thought our sensitive and emotional side was a gift,
from their grandma. But that’s not true.
One day, in my musings of the past, I realized it was you that cried,
in the dark, watching sappy late night movies.
And when distant family left after a visit, it was you who cried saying farewell.
You know what I did?
I told my boys I was wrong, that grandpa is where our tears come from.
Have I told you how I miss you every single day?
I cannot wait to see you again. I know one day I will.
When I am done in this world and my spirit goes… wherever spirits go,
I know you’ll be there to welcome me home.
Your loving Daughter~
