Why?

Why do I volunteer to fix things and pay for things that others can't or won't and then I don't even get a thanks from them!
Today, I worked outside under the hot sun putting the motor back together on the riding lawn mower. A few days ago, I picked up the head at the machine shop where I had the exhaust valve reseated. I paid the $90 and something to have that done, and another $5 for gasket stuff.
The reason why it broke to begin with was because ex took it out of the metal shed (which was mouse proof) to make room for bf's trash, and just kept it covered outside. Mice built a nest under the hood of the motor preventing it from cooling properly so it overheated and sucked in a valve!
Sometimes I feel like their father, like they are thinking, "That's ok! Dad will fix it!"
The roof leaks too which means someone will have to go up there and fix that. I know right where it's leaking and how to fix it but I haven't done that yet. All depends on how much longer I am here.
My thumb is extremely sore today also. The dr. told me to resume normal activities but that doesn't work.  I can't put much pressure on my thumb, plus it is swelled up bigger then it has ever been.  I think I may call the dr tomorrow and tell him about that.
So I haven't had a good weekend so far, but it will get better, I hope!

Billi thanks yes its all part of the agreement. Since she has the car, she is required to take me to all my dr appts but that gives me a chance to save my pennies,
GJM yes I remember u saying that to me before and you are definitely right on. Thanks!

I don\'t even know what to say about all of that except your doing it to yourself. Only you can change you. It\'s not what everyone\'s doing around you, it\'s how you are reacting to what they are doing.

If it were me, I\'d concentrate on getting the hell out of there and let it go to hell in a handbasket.

If you really want to fix someone\'s mower - come fix mine - I\'ll appreciate it and cook you a nice meal!

Ditto to KRKing911: I have a house for sale, and I\'m paying my neighbor who is a master carpenter a lot of money every month to caretake it and now some idiot inspector made charges against structural beams (that I hope aren\'t true, I\'m having my own inspection done Monday) that cost me a buyer. I sure could use you around, Bob. The house is empty but furnished and I live in the Catskills. LOL.

As said above...only you can change you. Stop the unappreciated volunteering and put Bob first! Give your thumb a rest...you are over working it.
As for the roof...it is EX wife\'s house now and I think you said you had 3 months or so to be out! The roof is not your problem. If you want to do the labor fine but let EX wife pay out for the materials. Which is what should have happened with the cost of the motor rebuild if the mower belongs to her now.
Get tough Bob!

I do hope you are keeping a log of what you spend and copies of all receipts.. Pay for things with checks and write in the memo area what they are for..
Charge them for any repairs you do, or at least present her with a bill, and a monthly statement if she doesn\'t pay you.
If they give you slack about it, stop doing anything for them.
Don\'t repair the roof.. Let her get an estimate to do it. When she sees she can\'t afford it, offer to repair if for a little less then the estimate...(have her pay you for the supplies and your services up front)
I do not think the stipulation in the divorce decree was that you stay there and be their handyman.. You are there until your thumb heals properly...doing these things for them can jeopardize the proper healing of your thumb..

And put some ice on the thumb and your wrist to help reduce the swelling..

This is an easy problem to fix--stop doing things for them. They know you will do it and for the life of me, I can\'t understand why you are doing this.
