Ups and downs.

My recovery from Monday’s experience was very gradual.  By Thursday I was back to walking a couple minutes every hour or two and doing a few things in between rest periods.  Friday morning we had an appointment at the Social Security Office in Aberdeen (50 miles away).  I’ve dealt with SS people over the phone in the past.  After a long period on hold, I sometimes get a helpful person and sometimes I don’t.  I had heard about the hassle of going through security at the Federal Building and I was not looking forward to that.  The building itself is most unwelcoming.  It is surrounded by a parking lot for employees only.  All around there are signs saying “NO VISITORS” and “DO NOT ENTER.”  There is just one Handicapped spot by the door that is difficult to see and get to.  Luckily that was open. Otherwise we would have to park on the street and climb a hefty incline to get to in.  I can’t imagine trying that when the weather is bad!  Anyway, once we got inside, there was a whole different vibe.  The security guards were pleasant and did their job with aplomb.  We were cordially directed to the SS office and talked with a very personable and helpful representative.  After our appointment, we met our daughter and her family and got a tour of their new apartment.  We all went out and had a delightful lunch together.  I didn’t really feel up to running any more errands or shopping, so we came home.  Although tired, I wanted to tidy up a bit before resting – after all, I had just been riding in the car for an hour.  Then I went to bed with a book, but fell asleep before I got it open.  When I awoke, I felt awful – weak, tired, shaky, dizzy, short of breath.  I made it to the bathroom then collapsed in my chair.  D was out in the garage and just calling him from my cell phone was an effort.  I asked him to get me something to eat, then just sat and concentrated on breathing slow and deep.  I did feel better after eating and could get up and move around, but was soon ready for bed again.
This morning I feel okay.  Today we will be packing and getting ready for our drive to the Cancer Center in Tulsa.  Hope to get some answers there.

Oh, my goodness! You have been through a lot this week. It sounds like you are tapped out. I can only imagine how hard it is to deal with SS. I have yet to try to deal with them. What holds me back is just knowing how much of a giant pain in the butt it will be. I\'ve had several people tell me I should apply for disability, but wow, I\'m not looking forward to that mess. Love you.
