I was diagnosed about 15 year ago just based on my history and clinical symptoms only. The doctors gave me a diagnosis of possible MS, just because it was the first time I came in. The next time, they said probable diagnossis. Then by about the 3rd or 4th time, it was just RRMS. An infection definitely flares up the symptoms. I do understand the mental/emotional part. When you feel a hope about being able to get somewhere with your condition,it makes such a difference. Doctors often want to wait a little longer before they give you a definitive diagnosis.
