My supervisor sometimes gets into odd situations through no fault of his own. Here's one of them that he shared this week.
Last Saturday, he was cleaning his attic out -- one of his sons used to have a bedroom there -- and he found a fantastic array of plastic soda bottles, dozens of them. They were all recyclable and there must have been over 100 of them. So he took the bottles and went down to a Stop and Shop to return them in the bottle machines there.
Upon his arrival he met a woman of Asian descent who was working the glass bottle machine with one of those cartloads of bottles that I occasionally see Asian people collect for whatever reason (not mine to speculate). My supervisor asks if he can use the plastic bottle machine, and she says yes he can.
It's a tight fit with the woman's cart, but my supervisor makes it to the machine and it's working real good; he's done with the bottles very quickly for the load he had. When he finishes, he is basically pinned because another Asian person, this one male, had arrived with a load of bottles of his own.
My supervisor pushes the button to get his slip, and the moment he plucks it both of the Asians are reaching for the plastic bottle slot...apparently they both had a plastic bottle to put in. Even though he was clearly there second, the man reaches it first. Whereupon the woman used her bottle to whack the man's bottle away. Then she reached across my supervisor and started hitting the man over the head with her plastic bottle, repeatedly calling him an unpleasant seven-letter word. Within a few seconds both of them are tugging on my supervisor to get in whacks upside each other's heads with plastic bottles, even though my supervisor had done absolutely nothing wrong and just wanted to get out.
He actually could have pressed charges against both of them if he wanted to for assault (unwanted touching). But after he did his shopping and checked out, he discovered that store personnel had spotted the bottle fight and called the police. We don't know what happened from there, but my impression is that the two Asians doing caveman impressions on each other (look what Thag do!) were both hauled away.
