Lurking deep inside of me is a small part of my heart that gets a kick out of being just plain evil....eeevil....eeeeeeeevillll.....mwahahaha...
Evil?
Case in point: At holiday time last year one of the gifts I got was a Montreal Canadiens sweatshirt hoodie.  I really don't follow the NHL like I used to anymore (although if the plan that was tabled this year to kill the six-division format and return to four eventually goes through that might change), but that doesn't mean I have no use for it.
I have an uncle who is a Canadiens fan.  They haven't had a particularly good year, but it seems none of his teams do anymore (he also follows the Orioles and Browns). Since they were destined to miss the playoffs (and as it has happened they finished dead last in the East and 28th overall), I started to screw with his head by wearing the shirt to his house.
The first time, he said, "Canadiens....arugh!"
The second time: "You know I don't like that shirt!" (Of course, if they had a good year and made the playoffs, he'd like it just fine, and has admitted that.)
The third time, without the shirt, we were talking about the Hockey East tournament and I mentioned how Merrimack (his school) has done better than the Habs: "Canadiens?  Who are they?....I have Canadian beer here, do you want some?...You mean the hockey team Canadiens?"
The fourth time, it was the day after Montreal's fate was sealed, and I was wearing the shirt: "I knew you'd rub it in!"
The next week he finally said, without provocation, that he felt his boys had resigned from the NHL because they had cleaned out their front office.
I think it's closer to the truth to say that owner Geoff Molson, the Canadian beer magnate, had seen enough.  This season was more a circus than anything else for Montreal (including trading a player in the middle of a game and then leaving him stranded in his hotel room for two hours before telling him where he was going).
