Progress
Yesterday I was able to help someone with my new language skills, and I found, to my surprise that it helped me also.
Learning a language consumes time. It forces you to leave grief behind and concentrate on learning. It recreates you in a way, opens new avenues, new adventures. Learning Spanish has led me to a online group of learners. I've also met a few people in-person who are further alone in the language. It has changed me from the tragic widow, to the woman with a new life ahead of her.
Learning a new language is the best way to do that.
There are research studies about how learning a new language could put off dementia. When I'm studying, I can feel the mental strain. It's sort of like a different part of my brain is being taxed. In the early days it seemed overwhelming, but now it's coming easier.
I'm having a ball!

Tru,
Are you going to school for your language study? What language are you learning?
That is a great idea, and I\'d be interested in what you are doing.
Hugs, Linda
I would love to learn Spanish. There are so many spanish speaking people in the US that it would be very beneficial. I also think French would be fun to learn.
Congratulations on learning a new language. It\'s wonderful to be able to travel to a Spanish speaking country and speak their language. I still find it sad though that people coming here do not feel a need to learn our language. My daughter is fluent in both French and Spanish and has been able to travel freely and comfortably in both Mexico and Europe.
Alot of people coming here would love to learn English, but there are not enough teachers and money is a problem for most imigrants.
Linda, I\'m learning using Rosetta Stone. Better than school and a lot cheaper.
I think learning period helps against dementia. I am learning Excel 2 every wednesday. It makes me feel that I am alive. I have a job interview this morning near by so I can walk to it. I hope I get this one. It would be ideal for me. All the best to you in learning Spanish and meeting new people and exercising your brain from Diane B.
