It is a hard go at first. The narratives are quite spell binding. However, it is easy to get bogged down on the genealogies in Numbers and Chronicles. I think there are 11 chapters straight in 1 Chronicles.
But they are given for a reason. They are the history of Israel, and go back to the earliest generations. They also tell a story. All the Hebrew names tell a story. You may not know what the names mean, but as time goes by, you will understand more and more. I used to find some of prophets were difficult to read. But I studied, and learned what they were talking about, and now they are fascinating.
Basically, the OT is God's Word to us! As much as the NT! It is the story of God's people and all the prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
As for the New Testament, this verse is not talking about it. It is actually talking about the OT Scriptures.
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2Tim 3:16-17
That's a very strong reason for everyone to read the OT. Don't give up, there are so many amazing verses in the OT!
I was busy with my school work. In Jan I flew to Toronto to meet my new grandson. When I got back, I got pneumonia and barely got out of bed for a month. A few weeks later, we were off to California and Oregon, where I was more consistent in my reading. Sickness and pain continued to plague me, and my eyes became worse, making it harder to read. I will have to go back to a larger print Bible. The NET had 60,000 very small footnotes I had to read with a magnifying glass.
I started having heart troubles in August and got my diagnosis in September. I was quite depressed for over a month, till the new meds started working. I audited a very difficult course by a Princeton professor on Liberation Theology this term, the reading list was endless. I bought many books and downloaded and printed thousands of pages.
But, I do feel the devil was behind trying to detour me from reading my Bible. I am going to put on the full armour of God, and get back on track this New Year and New Decade!
I hope many of you will join me with a fresh start in reading the Bilboe.
