I got the idea to try a cross country trip a couple of months ago and have decided to go for it. I figure why not? I'm young enough that I don't have any solid attachments holding me here and I'd like to see what life is like outside of my home city.
The thing that's really pushing me to try is a comment made by my now ex boyfriend. He laughed when I told him and said "Bree, people don't do that kind of thing anymore. It only happens in books." That really annoyed me because I have a strong feeling that if I'd been a guy friend suggesting this, he would've been more encouraging, maybe even have offered to join me. But because I'm a woman, men think it's completely unrealistic that I can travel alone or that I should even want to.
Any of you ladies ever done it or really considered the idea?

I actually toyed with the idea of driving from MS to Alaska just to do it. Was gonna go up and see Montana and then come down the Pacific Coast highway before heading home...but I listened to other people and their main question was 'what the hell is in Alaska?' they had no sense of adventure...I didn't go. now i have a husband, a 3year old and a baby on the way. My roadtripping days are over. Go for it while you can. Just be safe about it. If you can get a friend to go with you and help with driving and money, do it. Otherwise, buy a can of mace for your keychain.
I've never really traveled before except to fly to seattle to visit my sis a couple of years ago, but I definately have the traveling bug.
Unfortunately, I have to wait a year until I can even attempt this. I have no money and no car, and I'm thinking they might come in handy lol. I've set my departure date for spring of 2011, figuring that that'll give me enough time to save up and get a better idea of where I'm heading. Who knows, maybe by then I'll actually meet someone I'd be willing to travel with, but if not then oh well, I'm still going.
The plan so far is to travel up the east coast from pennsylvania, stopping in nyc and boston, then going west, across the northern states, until I reach the west coast. I have my sights set on olympia, wa, and plan to settle down there if it's as nice as I remember...
