My boyfriend and I have been long distance for 2 years, and if everything goes as planned, he’ll be starting the academy this winter. I’m nervous about it because we’re going to be 4 hours further than we already are, he’ll have to live at the academy mon-fri, and from what I hear he’ll be experiencing the biggest challenge of his life. I imagine that our communication and visits will be much more limited as he’ll be extremely busy, but it saddens me that I won’t be there to support him through it the way that I want to. Any advice/general comments would be appreciated!

My significant other is at the academy currently. It is very hard and we spend the entire weekends together when he is home. Be prepared for less communication. He will need time and space to process his week if he has any anxiety, which is normal. Just make sure he knows you are there to support him. Some weeks are harder than others.

Hi! My husband is currently in the police academy as well. He stays over nights and gets to come home some weekends... it’s been quite hard and I would love to have someone to talk to about it. I just haven’t been able to find very many good resources for pre-graduation cadets...

It’s so nice to hear from you. It’s very difficult to be away so often, I totally get that. My boyfriend is still yet to join the academy, but he’s been traveling a lot for the pre-employment requirements. I’m so happy to hear from other people who are having similar experiences, though! I don’t have many family/friends who have been through this to turn to for support!
