My AH had a near miss got onto a detox programme, since last Tuesday . So far so good. My two lovely grown up sons came out to offer him some support and to tell him how much he means to them and that they don't want to lose him. I had to drop them at the airport which is a four hour round trip, by the time I got back he had bought himself beer and had drunk it(didn't know about it till I found the cans in the bathroom bin). So here we are, he is taking the medication, he has an appointment this week to see a stomach specialist to see how severe his liver disease is.
Just wanted to rant a bit and really appreciate the support here. I read all the posts and can relate to most of the stories.
Wishing everyone happiness and strength to cope with what seems impossible at times.
I am trying to make plans for myself and my own future at the moment
My question to everyone is should I tell my sons about the beer or wait to see what happens with the specialist. They are under the impression their dad hasn't touched a drop since starting the detox.
I am in a similar spot with adult kids and an AH who stopped and started drinking again.
I told them. They were angry and have talked to him about it. He has told one of them that he is planning to quit but it is so hard, blah blah blah... and he keeps drinking.
I would tell them. Why not? Maybe they will say something that will get through to him. Maybe not. But even if your AH isn't honest with them, there is no reason why you shouldn't be.
I'm so sorry about your disappointment. I have been where you are many times. I was married to an alcoholic for 22 years. My husband walked our little dog every morning...even when I had already taken her out. It was so he could down two beers to stop the shakes.
.It took me a long time to figure it out. The last three years of our marriage, he would drink those alcoholic beverages with caffeine that college kids drink. It's like a six pack in one can. He always hid the cans well but I could smell the mango...or watermelon flavor.
I was always honest with the kids. By the time he died, we were all emotionally exhausted...as was my husband. There are some great success stories in rehab. It didn't work for us. It could for your husband.
Have faith. Try to be supportive. Don't blow your top! Observe and always make personal plans and set goals for yourself. Please keep us posted! Blessings!
