I am torn between deep compassion for my very sick husband, and frustration when I see the bourbon bottle on the floor next to his chair.he is in end stage alcoholism...or close to it anyway. When I remember he has a disease he canencenot seem to fight, I am more co mpassionate. When I am tired or he won't flush the toilet or he takes off to buy more alcohol late at night I lose patients. I try to be gentle and compassionate, but also keep myself separated and independent. So hard to know the right approach. Glad I can share here with you people...you make a difference. Thank you.

In regards to above...I lose patience...not patients! Lol

It's hard to have any patients with them totally understand where you are coming from. How do you know when AH is in end stage? I see so many symptoms in my A but it's so hard to tell. He works 40 plus hours some weeks, never misses work except for last year he was in a rut and we were arguing which lead to more drinking and over sleeping. His work put him on probation for a year for not calling in and he hasn't missed any since. He doesn't drink at work but their is a liquor store just a few miles from his work that he will stop at after work. We live a good 20 miles from his work so he drinks all the way home so he's usually drunk by the time he makes it home. He drinks everyday if not he's sickly. Its weird to me how he can go all day at work even can work OT and not drink till he's off but on his days off he starts early if not I can see his body reacting to not drinking, sweats, shaking hands, pale and looks mentally confused . I hear him every morning gagging but when I ask if he has thrown up he says no!

Crazy, isn't it! My husband sleeps most of the day and night. Eating very little. He still drinks...my husband drank directly after work, also...he is retired now. If you Google stages of alcoholism you can read the various categories. Not everyone believes in stages for alcoholics, but it helps me wrap my mind around what is happening. I am thinking of you as you go through this rough journey.

It is crazy, I'm so glad mine isn't retired yet he has a few more years. He gets 4 weeks a year vacation time and will take it just to sit home and drink all day long! I can't even imagine how my body would react to that much alcohol.... I joke to my daughter that his organs have to be pickled by now. I have read the signs of the stages actually last year my daughter called me up and told me to read it. She had looked it up, everything points to him as end stage. Except for being sick, he's never really been sick he does gag in the mornings like he's throwing up but will not admit to it. He has regular check up's with a Physician's Assistant that he sees, which I don't know if he's completely honest with him. I used to work with this PA and i've tried telling him how bad he was drinking but he actually told me a few drinks won't hurt him let him enjoy something! A few drinks maybe not, but my A drinks straight from the whiskey bottle and sips a sprite to wash it down. A pint + beer a day somedays 2 pints! He's been in recovery 3 times only because he was forced, but he knew how to talk his way out. He use to not eat until he finished drinking and then he would pig out on anything he could find, like a block of cheese he's melted in the microwave with nothing else lol! At times he eats alot but not really since he doesn't eat 3 meals aday. Lately I've noticed him drinking a beer with dinner instead of getting a glass of sweet tea something he never did. He's always been short and stocky not fat but the past couple of years his belly looks swollen like a pregnant woman. He had an endoscopy done 2 years ago and had pre cancer cells in his esophagus they gave him some med's to counter act, he's due this year to repeat it. That alone would be a reason for me to stop drinking his dad passed away in his early 50's with esophagus cancer. Thank you for your thoughts as mine are with you also. It's nice to have somewhere to vent and not feel like your looking for sympathy just want someone who knows how you feel and can relate to what your dealing with. Other than your family.
