Wives of Alcoholics Community Group
A forum of healing and help for wives of alcoholics.
This last year has been a difficult one. My boyfriend has had a problem with alcohol, maybe even for the whole 8 years we've been together. I didn't want to admit it and didn't talk about it til a year ago. We have 2 bathrooms in the apartment and each use one to have our own space. It was a few months ago that I discovered that he drinks in the bathroom. I found all kinds of empties in there. He does spend a lot of time in there, but he takes a long time tp get ready to go anywhere and now I know why. There were times after we had dinner that he wouls go in there for a while and he wouldn' seem right when he came out. When I asked him if he was ok he would always say he was fine and he was just tired. Things started making a lot more sense once I realized he drinks in there, so his drinking was a lot worse than I realized. He often goes out on his own saying he's going to the convenience store and then he comes back drunk hours later cause he had to go the bar after. He's missed probably close to 10 days of work since January cause he drank too much the night before...and that's only the times I know about. I came home at lunch one day to check on my sick cat and found him in bed. He left for work before me, but got sick on the way and came home. When I got home from work he was off drinking again. I started going to Al Anon meetings and he made fun of me for going and said that I was creating this issue. The day after one of my meetings about a month ago he did a complete 180 and said he needs to quit drinking and that he's been depressed for years. That's the first time he's ever said anything like this. He won't go to AA and he refuses therapy. I've been trying to get him to go or even start with an online therapy but no luck. I know I can't force him. Things did seem to get better for a bit and we seemed to be getting our relationship back on track and a spark that had been missing for while was coming back. He's still drinking, not as much I think, but he's still trying to be sneaky about it at times. He will have one in front of me and then go to the bar if I fall asleep on the couch. That happened Friday night. I woke up when he got home and it was 2am and he was drunk and he hadn't eaten dinner yet. He brought home some food but wasn't eating it. I was trying to get him to eat so he didn't just have alcohol for dinner and he lashed out at me. Said that he was mad at me for talking to other guys. I have a couple guy friends who I used to talk to..nothing ever happened between us but he thinks otherwise. He didn't like it so I stopped talking to them months ago and he still brings it up. He said that he has a buncj of girls messaging him and he's going to start hooking up with them. After our fight that night he expects things to be fine and I'm feeling like crap once again. Especially after feeling things were getting better. I mean I have felt that before and been disapppointed but this time was different as he admitted to me how he was feeling and that he had a problem. So it feels like a bigger letdown this time and don't know if I can deal with this again with him. So I'm struggling whether I should keep going to meeting and try to work through this or if I should cut him lose and focus on my own life and happiness. Sorry for the long post...appreciate any comments/thoughts.
you cannot make him quit. you cannot make him stop the verbal abuse. you cannot make him pay attention to the amount of money spent or the days lost from work. You will not be able to stop him from losing his job.
You can offer to take him to a support group. you can offer to assist him in finding a therapist.
at the end of the day you must decide if this is the relationship you want to stay in and have the constant drain of energy or if you want to make a fresh start.
