Wives of Alcoholics Community Group
A forum of healing and help for wives of alcoholics.
Hello. I am a wife of an alcoholic. We are faith based non denominational Christians. I believe that although drinking is not okay.. It’s a sickness that I cannot cure. Anyone ever read the book Alcoholics Anonymous? It’s a recommended book for anyone wanting to educate themselves in this struggle.
So ive been married for almost 6 years. I know that’s not long compared to most.. but within those years I’ve seen change in the way my husband and I think. He still struggles if not more so now than he did before, but he’s beginning to be “self-aware” of his struggle. It’s hard because we do expect for our husbands to get better for us like we’re enough or we think we should at least be enough. But ultimately it’s not about us. I know that’s hard to believe in, but it’s not. It’s a temptation they gave into at one point in their lives and they enjoyed it a little too much. Now for me my husband isn’t physically abusive but he can be emotionally abusive. He’s used to manipulating his way to get what he wants.. but he’s getting better at not doing that.. lately it’s just been more of a mental shut down. Like he’s no longer aware of anything around him all his focus is on is getting what he wants. And it hurts. It can make me feel taken advantage of or used. But what I’m learning is to.. 1.) Trust in God and 2.) Find my own way of getting through all of this without feeling ill feelings towards him.
Now I know my story isn’t the same as everyone else’s.. But if you’ve felt like you have tried everything and nothing ever works.. try reading that book I suggested.. Things can be looked at in a different light.. And it never hurts to try something different.
