Someone asked me why I put up with the BS I do. I come by it honestly. My oldest brother is a alcoholic. I got together with him this past weekend, he of course got drunk and so much pain in his words about the past when we grew up. You don't really know what to say, all I want to do is take the pain away. We didn't grow up to stable, I just wish the pain was gone and things could be different. We talked about treatment and he is ready for it, However, the cost is so much and Insurance doesn't cover all the cost. He did go to AA I know that. I really don't know what happened with that. He can be belligerent and loud and obnoxious. I know he lost a lot of friends and a lot of family won't be around him ether. I have my own alcoholic to deal with, but it just makes me sad. He was a great big brother, and I love him so. I know I can't do anything but It don't make it any easier.
My stbx husband is an alcoholic and my brother is an active drug addict, who for most of his life has managed to make his lifestyle appear very glamorous. As he ages it slowly is appearing more pathetic and desperate - he is also very loud, obnoxious and opinionated. I have no relationship with him even though he "works" at the same company and I frequently see him.
His abuse of himself and my enabling codependent father, narcissistic mom has made a relationship impossible.
I really believe that the dysfunctional family patterns is worthwhile studying because we see the same ones in families with addiction... and the same patterns in family after family.
I am also caught in the middle of my own situation and brother's addictions. I really understand your post.
I know this may sound trite, but pray for him. The only thing you can do is work on yourself and pray for those who continue to suffer. We do not know what is best for anyone else so it is hard to stand by and watch people we love continue to hurt themselves. However, this is not our responsibility. All we can do is love them and pray for them. Sending you 10,000 angels of peace today...
