My husband started drinking daily several months before I even realized that he was drinking at all. I discovered sexual messages between he and another woman and he blamed stress, depression, and drinking. From that point I really started paying attention and although he said he was going to quit drinking, he only cut back. He has told me several times since then that he was going to quit or limit to the weekends but those words never panned out beyond a couple of days. My big issue is the lying. Because once again this weekend, we talked about his drinking being excessive and he said he was going to try to quit again. He has purchased 3 different bottles already this week and hides them in his truck to drink when he thinks I'm busy. He doesn't realize I know because I've checked our bank statement. When I asked how he was doing and if he's struggled at all with quiting he told me he is great and not struggling at all. I'm at a point in our relationship where I just want to ignore it because I feel like it will never change and let him fall on his face when the time comes. Most concerning though, is my urge to find ways to revenge lie to him. I'm not a vengeful kind of person typically and my recent thoughts have gone completely against my own moral standards. I feel like I would leave if it were just me but I agonize over the effects it would have on the lives of our three bio children and the two children we are in the process of adopting. Opinions, ideas, and advise welcome and appreciated!
Sorry that you are going through this with your husband. I have learned that the one thing is Alcoholics are manipulating compulsive liars. It has gotten to the point with mine that I can no longer trust what he says to me now. I have tried to get my own back and nothing will result. All they care about is the alcohol. Living with an Alcoholic is very uncomfortable for me because I feel on my own. Alcoholism is a progressive illness. Alcohol comes first on their priority list. He told me from last year through till today that he is going to cut down on his drinking.
I feel exactly the same. I am so sick of hearing them say they will stop and say they are doing great at not drinking, while the whole time they have been lying and hiding. I wish they would actually do what they say. But same as you, i just can’t believe what he tells me anymore.
I feel like I could have written your post. My husband’s choice drinking spot is his car. There are dozens of empty whiskey bottles in there and if you ask him, he’ll always say he’s sober. He has gotten to the point where he says he’s just getting something out of his car and then he’ll come back in 20 minutes later, drunk. It has progressed over the last 6 or 7 years while we were trying to get pregnant and then had our two children. He is so mentally abusive and being lied to everyday is exhausting and heart breaking. I also know if it weren’t for my children that I’d be long gone! He has destroyed our love and any relationship we had left. I am literally only with him because I’m too scared of what would happen to our children if he were to get joint custody.
I have no advice, just that I’m here with you and I feel your pain.
Ugh! I am in the beginning of my dealing with a high functioning alcoholic and haven’t even gotten to the “I know I have a problem and I’ll quit” and lying part. I am fearful that may begin soon. And I, like you, struggle with how to act every day! Fight and ignore and play his game, or love and “act” like everything is fine? I never know. I’m sorry, friend. I feel your dilemma. I always say though that as long as you’re always doing the right thing, and always better, then what argument and case does he have against you? Stay on higher ground. You’ll probably need that “ammo” later.
Oh my, children are a blessing and should never have to see the drunk at any stage. The drunk scrambles their little brains and they no longer feel safe in their house because the MONSTER DAD. could come back. Children pick up stuff you are desperately trying to hide.
But you already know this. You gotta face the facts and figure a way out so your children do not suffer. My mother forced me to stay with the family and her husband and at 51 years old, I still trying to work that stuff and understanding. The child thinks if the mother/father, stays with the badly behaved drunk, that they have no value.
This was proven to me the last time I saw my mother. I told her of dad's affairs (he shared everything with me, it was gross). He told me in detail about her feminine hygene so she could hear it. Did she confront him? NO, SHE CONFRONTED ME. A child, no matter the age, should know or be a privy to their parent's sex life.
The last time I saw her, she screamed at me GET OVER IT and I politely asked her to leave for she has made her decision quite clear. All this time I thought my mother loved me, but since she was a victim to his tirades, she used my brother and I as shield and then would look away while we were getting beat or yelled at for hours.
I once looked over my dad's screaming shoulder (I was about 8 years old) and mouthed the words HELP US and she looked away. I thought mother protected their young with fiericenss but my mother was just out to focus my dad's attention away FROM HER. So I walked away from them all and they are shaking their heads.
Oh man it sounds very similar to my situation however we don't have kids. My bf keeps saying he will quit or cutback. This happens for maybe a couple weeks and then he's at it worse than ever. He tries to hide it too...lies where he is and how much he's had to drink. He'll maybe have one drink in front of me and then go somewhere else to drink more. I'm starting to realize that he has a big enough problem thay cutting back isn't enough, he needs to quit altogether but isn't willing to. Also it's something he can't do on his own...needs AA or therapy but refuses both. It's so hard to know what to do...thinking of you!
