Partner of alcoholic ready to end relationship

I am the partner of an alcoholic who recently went through detox, and has been prescribed antabuse... however he has recently started drinking again, and hiding it and lying, although in usual alcoholic style he denies it, the reaction that he takes to the antabuse is not enough to deter him from drinking as all it seems to do is give him a flushed face and blood shot eyes and a cough... I told him i woud contact the alcohol centre where he has to atend to take his medication, but he threatens me and tells me that if i do that i will get him taken off the antabuse and detox programme..... Seriosuly ready to end this relationship, howver if i do that, this is my house and it would mean me putting him out on the streets with no means of accomodation etc..... has anyne else been faced with any of this and if so how did you deal with it?? i should also mention i have children aged 11 and 16 living at home.

Hi Lorraine, I recently went through something similar. I finally reached my limit when his drinking escalated, he lost his job, and I couldn't stand the sight of him passed out on the couch. It was so depressing, and taking a toll on my kids too. I wanted my kids to feel comfortable having their friends over, but he was embarrassing and so he had to go. I honestly didn't care where he went as long as he left. Horrible to get to that point, but I felt I had done all that I could over the past 8 years, and my kids & I deserve a better environment. It's strange at first, but it becomes a new normal. The calmness in the house is SO nice. I feel like I am rediscovering myself again, and I'm truly enjoying the process. He has to take responsibility for his actions. Being homeless might give him a wake up call if you can manage it. If he has a sponsor he may be able to help. I found a lot of support in a local Celebrate Recovery Group. The steps help me control my unhealthy reactions and I've learned to not be manipulated as much. I wish you well. I also have 2 children. It's hard sometimes to know what is best, but if he is drunk a lot in front of them that is not good. They have teenager groups too to help them process the crap they are experiencing. If the man is not their father maybe the decision is more cut and dry. Find a safe place!!
