I hope that I don't anger or upset any of you with this post...
I am so happy that I could burst tonight. My ex husband made it one year today...one entire year sober. He went to his AA meeting and got his gold coin. I realize that in the whole scheme of things, it's only a year...but he did make it this far. I realize he could falter tomorrow and fall off the wagon...I'm smart enough to realize he could make it 10 years and fall off the wagon...but for now, I'm just celebrating where he's at. One day at a time...
It's been a very long year. Our marriage was destroyed in the process...but I still love him, love him dearly...and I'm so proud of him. We have slowly begun to rebuild a friendship and that's all I want from him.
I hope I don't offend anyone with this post. I've spent the last year reading and writing occasionally on here and it's provided me a lot of strength to get myself thru this, to get my children thru this, to learn how to put boundaries up as my ex husband navigated the last year. It's meant a lot to me. It makes me feel better to try to offer advice and assurance and support to those that are still navigating. I don't know what I would have done without this group...
congrats to your one year. no one should be upset/mad/offended that you want to celebrate. it IS a big deal :)
and this is NOT to burst your bubble either... but my husband went 16 months before he relapsed. at first it was just to "test" whether or not he was really an alchoholic, but it got worse. he just went another 3 months (108 days actually) after we had gone through a LOT of drama, trauma (ER visits, police involement, a few days in the mental hospital). I'm kind of at a loss because the sad thing is, I still love him very much.
I guess all of that was kind of a downer, when you really want, NEED to celebrate (sorry!)
my downfall is that when he wasn't drinking and things were okay, I stopped going to meetings, reading, and started ignoring these posts because it didn't pertain to me anymore (dumb!)
good luck my friend, I really do wish you the very best!
No one should be upset at a wonderful milestone! Congratulations to him for making it a year. I know you realize that he could relapse tomorrow or next week or even next month. Be careful with your heart, its ok to be friends with him and support his accomplishment. I too have a husband that will always be my friend although he won't be a part of my life, we have gone through hell with our mates and love them regardless. But, we need to love ourselves more and take care of us. I too quit reading these posts, and after I made up my mind that I was going to move away, I came back. I will never leave this site again. It offers so much insight and support (even when you think you are strong).
I was just worried about upsetting individuals whose husbands or bfs are still drinking...I made a post on another site that I belong to and was berated for it, with people telling me that it was inconsiderate. It made me feel terrible.
It's ok peekers, even though my ex husband hit a year yesterday it's always in the back of my head that he could go back to it. He often tells me that he had a day where all he wanted was to go to the liquor store and buy a 12pk or buy a bottle of Crown (his favorite). So far, he's resisted and found other things to do. I'm not really a religious person, but I do say a little prayer every day for him that he is able to make it through just one more day.
Hope4Sobriety, some people can't understand how I can be friends with my ex husband after all that he put me and the kids through. It's impossible to explain to people...but I will always love him. We will never again function as a couple because I just can't go there again...but he is welcome as my friend, as long as he is sober. And even if he falters, I still can't imagine completely walking away from him...we'll go back to the distance between us, with me still supporting him from a distance.
This last year has taught me so much. I've learned my own culpability in what happened, learned how I enabled him, learned as he got sober what his personality actually is (compared to what I THOUGHT I knew while we were married), learned how important it is that I care for myself first. I spend less time on here than I did a year ago...or even 3 mo ago...but I can't imagine ever completely leaving it. Even still, it offers me a lot and it makes me feel better to share some of my experiences.
Congrats. Nothing to be worried about. I wouldn't have given up on my EXAH if it wasn't for the other woman. That was just more than I could handle. And my EXAH never attempted to quit His alcoholism didn't kill my feelings but his infidelity did. That crossed line even though I knew it was result of the alcoholism. Happy for your family. One day at a time is all you or anyone cam ask Of your ex
My fiance would have made one year in 15 days, he only had 15 days left.....
Im so proud of your ex husband for making it so far, because its really difficult.
I REALLY knew, for a fact, that my fiance could make once year.
but he didn't....
I share your joy. Today my husband celebrates two years clean from alcohol. He makes AA meetings and takes recovery seriously. I thought our 34 years of marriage was over. We have both Ben in individual therapy and we go for marriage counseling. This is a family disease and there is no cure. He can never drink again.
We both take it one day at a time. Our friendship is being restored and slowly my feelings for him are improving.
With treatment there is hope.
Congratulations to you and your husband. One day at a time.
Unfortunately biana9253, he is my ex-husband. We divorced several months ago because the strain on our marriage was too much. We moved out a few weeks before he decided to get sober, tried to reconcile, then he told me that we were "a threat to his sobriety" and we quit trying to fix things and proceeded with the divorce. Congrats to your husband for making it to 2 years, that's great!!
Lori47, I completely understand what you are saying. I didn't think that I could ever give up on him...and I really never gave up. I finally hit a point where I just had to support him from a distance. My ex cheated several times during our marriage and always blamed the alcohol. Had I known how many times he'd cheated, I probably would have left sooner...but I didn't find out about several of them until after we had divorced. For me, like you, that was almost worse than the alcoholism.
Congrats to your ex-husband......one year is great. My AH just celebrated his one year also in Apr. It was a big deal for us both. I am so very proud of him and we also have to take it one day at a time. I am a grateful member of al-anon. My AH attends AA meetings at least twice a week. Our lives have changed for the better that's for sure. We came very close to separating. I am still working on myself too, I was just as sick as him only I never drank. Those of you that attend Al-anon will understand that comment. My wish you all is to also share in a life of sobriety with your loved ones.
