Tomorrow is my birthday. I took the whole weekend off just in case I decided to go out of town or have a fun-filled weekend like I used to do. But all I really want to do is lie in bed all day undisturbed. I've realized that I've been depressed for about two years now but it's so hard to really face it. I went to twotherapy sessions with two different therapists. The first one I only talked about the stress at work because I used the counseling center at work and I was afraid somehow my coworkers would find out about my secret life as a wife of an alcoholic. Even though I know the center has nothing to do with my department and everything is completely confidential, I couldn't bring myself to go back. The second place I went I really did open up about how all of this is affecting me. But after I had spilled my guts and told the truth I was too embarrassed to go back. My husband berates me very often. He calls me all sorts of names and blames me for everything that's wrong in the world. The verbal and emotional abuse is terrible. It's getting harder and harder for me to pretend like everything is ok. My husband only has a short window every morning when he is sober so sometimes I try to have a rationale conversation with him but he is never able to realize the damage he is doing to me and to our relationship He says things like "at least I don't hit you. You need to toughen up. You're letting words get you upset." I've gotten through the last year of holidays by focusing my energy on my kids or my family. I don't expect gifts or acknowledgement from him anymore. Affection is nonexistent is our relationship so I've gotten used to that as well. But it's my birthday and I don't have anyone to shift the focus to. I thought I wanted to do something really fun with my friends but the more I think about having to smile and laugh and pretend all day, the sicker I get. I'd much rather be in my bed so at least I can be free to have a crying spell.
I know how you feel. I spent the first 5 years of our marriage depressed and I know it's hard to get yourself out of the cycle of focusing on the negatives when there are so many. My story might be a little different. I was with my AH for 7 months before I got pregnant and then had another pregnancy right after. I had post partum after my second daughter. My husband was out drinking every night and it was awful. I had a miscarriage between the two and had to go in to the hospital and have a DNC which my husband took me and dropped me off because he was already so drunk and didn't want anyone to see him and I ended up having to walk home from the hospital by myself while still partly drugged up from them putting me to sleep. I was so out of it and ended up on the other side of town not knowing what I was doing. I finally made it home and threw up and fell asleep. He forgot me. My point is, is that I had a lot of negative to focus on and I did just that. It made ME miserable along with our kids and him. It didn't help anything, it just made it worse. After years I have figured out that I had to change my thinking about it. I dont drink and I try really hard to do what is right by myself and my kids and by him, so I don't allow him to make anything my fault. his problems are his and remind yourself of that often because it will keep it from making you feel bad about yourself. praying for you and him.
I'm so sorry you went through that. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I appreciate your prayers. This network of support means so much to me. I no longer feel like I'm the only one that's going through turmoil. I've decided the best thing I can do for myself for my birthday is to make an appointment to speak to someone about my depression. I'm in school and I'm having a hard time motivating myself to do my work. I'm very behind and that's not like me. I just want to get back to the old me. The happy me. But you're right, I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not the cause of his problems. Thanks again. I feel a little stronger.
rose, hope you had a good birthday sweetie, I'm sorry that anyone has to endure what we as wives endure through their drunken state. It doesn't matter that he doesn't hit you, verbal abuse is much worst in my opinion. I married my 1st husband at an early age, we were high school sweethearts. He didn't drink but he did experiment with drugs, but back in the 80's it was alot different. He was very jealous and abusive. My husband now of 30 years only has a alcohol problem he has never been physical with me, but has been verbal (but not as bad as i've heard others are) but it's enough at times to make me cry and at times is bad enough to make me wanna get physical with him! I have to really control my temper when this happens as i'm afraid that I could lash out at him from all the anger built up inside me. Don't give in, don't let it control you like it controls him. I know its hard keep your focus on your kids and let them be your joy and reason to get out of bed.
Praying for you!
