I'm new to this group. I feel that I've cashed out my social support system lately with issues concerning my spouse, and I feel that i have no where left to turn. He was an alcoholic before I met him, and I knew it going into the marriage. Life has hit us hard. he hasn't handled the stress well. We have a daughter on the way, which has been our greatest blessing.
He says things he thinks but shouldn't say. Hurtful things that are unwarranted. He internalizes every word and every second of silence. Tonight was hard. I'm coming to a difficult point in my pregnancy, but still working 40 hours a week. After a hard day at work, I come home to him three sheets to the wind. Feeling pretty sick, and overall exhausted, I just wanted a relaxing evening. He's fired up from the liquor, and is angry at me for passively listening to the story he was telling me. "Fuck you don't talk to me" - his favorite sentence when he's drunk.
I have no words to get through to him anymore and he does not care. He tells me all the time. He struggles with depression and anxiety, he thinks the alcohol is a way of self medication.
Mostly tonight I just feel alone. My whole life I've dreamed of what it would be like to be pregnant, to be married, to be in love with someone. And every time I see that bottle hidden under the mattress I know that the day will bring me nothing but pain. He's the sweetest man when he's sober. But drinking whiskey to him is like pouring poison into his heart.
I also married an already alcoholic. But at that point, he didn't think he had a problem. I actually didn't start seeing that it was a problem until we were married. I had hopes and dreams of a happy marriage where the husband would help out and take care of me when I was pregnant, help take care of the boys when they were little, teach them all the dad things. But that wasn't meant for this relationship. Once we got married his drinking got worse, after each child I had, things would get a little worse even. Now, with an almost 16 year old and 13 year old boys, I have raised them being the mom and the dad, For him, it always seemed like the normal noise and play of the kids, was always just too much for him to handle. So he would always have to garage or some room in the house, to run away to and drink. Now adays, he will spend hours out of the house come home, go to his room and drink.
The family life I had always wanted, just never happened. It has made me very sad and resentful towards my AH for that, over the years. But what does keep me going, is knowing that I made great memories with and for my boys. We are very close. I know my AH cannot say the same. He is hardly ever around and when he is, he is very unavailable.
When he used to drink beer, I got to where I hated the sound of another beer being cracked open. Then it moved onto hating the sight of gatorade bottles, because he has been at the hiding alcohol stage for a very long time and would mix it with the gatorade. Now, because I am done caring about any of it anymore, it doesn't bother me like it used to.
I am deeply sorry and know the feelings you are going through. You have a place here to talk all you want about everything you are going through. God bless and take care of you and the unborn baby.
Man, that sucks. For some reason my AH would always get worse right before the birth of each baby. After my second birth my baby had medical problems and had to be in the NICU for 6 weeks on a breathing machine and had a feeding tube surgically put in her belly before we could take her home. I had lost a lot of blood and had issues from that, I refused the blood transfusion so it took me a long time to recover.
During all of this my AH would be passed out in our hospital room on pills, no help at all , our 6 year old there needing help to get food and I had to figure it out...rolling in my wheel chair to the cafeteria b/c I couldn't walk yet due to blood loss. Up around the clock pumping milk...horrible not having support. I look back and can't believe some of the s**t I have put up with.
He still doesn't realize what he has put me and our kids through. He still thinks he is a great husband/father, and that I am crazy. I have had to completely separate myself from him to be able to remain sane while living with him. I will not reconnect with him until he has a genuine breakthrough, humbled and truly realizing what his addiction has done. I don't know if that day will ever come.
It is a lonely life being married to an addict, I hope he can recover and realize, but for now I am trying to build myself back up. I am trying have my own life of peace and joy with no dependence on him for that. He still sucks it out of me when he is around, I haven't figured out how to stop that yet. but working on it. I hope you can find support here, I know I am!
I'm so sorry that anyone has to go through this, being married 30 years I would have to say the past 10 years have been the worst for me. While pregnant with my 1st he worked out of town and was only home on the weekends. I gave birth by c-section on Saturday night and he left Sunday to return to work so my mom helped me out alot. Our 2nd child I made the big mistake of letting my best friend and her new born live with us, I had a problem and had to spend the night in the hospital without my husband. He was drunk and making a move on my best friend! Nothing happened just to drunk to remember anything was his excuse.... As far as I know this is the only time he cheated or almost cheated on me!? He doesn't seem interested in other woman just the Whiskey so for me thats his love affair! My complaints would have to be the stupid comments over and over and nothing I say is ever right. If I say one thing off from another conversation he will accuse me of lying. Its lonely indeed. So many nights he's hard and fast asleep by 7pm and then other nights he will be up all night just to argue something stupid. And I too hate the sound of a beer can being opened! I look at my life to others and think am I being petty? I guess I do need that journal to keep up with all the bad things so that I can remember why I hate him when he's drunk. MY daughter is constantly reminding me of things that she remembers growing up. And it breaks my heart that I put that back in my mind and kept letting it all happen. I felt like I was sheltering my kids now I know they seen it all.
I hope you find help here as it has helped me to just talk and learn from others!
I am so sorry you are going through this. When I was pregnant, I had Braxton Hicks that I thought were the real deal so we went to the hospital. He had been drinking that day (as usual) and I remember feeling so alone and sad. I ended up being induced a week later. He was sober for that. Right after we got home from the hospital, he went back to drinking heavily. He worked out of town for weeks at a time and at the time I thought it was the hardest thing ever to be a single mom with a newborn for those long stretches of time. Now I miss it because all I had to worry about was my daughter.
Now I hear the beer cans opening and I just feel numb inside. He is amazing when he's sober but those days are becoming an extreme rarity.
We are all here for you. Sending you a hug.
I'm sorry you are going through this.Being pregnant should be a wonderful time. I remember giving birth and my husband leaving me to go drink and "celebrate" the birth and then come back later on early in the morning. Anyway, I know how it feels to feel alone. I hope that we can all support each other. Bless you and your baby
