Wives of Alcoholics Community Group
A forum of healing and help for wives of alcoholics.
Hi everyone. I'm new to this group, although I've been on DS for oh so many years. I've been with my alcoholic fiance (binge drinker) for almost 7 years and- well- recognizing the part of it where I'M not healthy. I feel like very slowly, almost without me noticing, I've come to live in this dome-like world. Very isolated, cut off from interaction with others other than my fiance. At some point I just gave up on other people, got tired of being shamed for his drunk behavior- the slurring speach, the confusion, the aggitation, stumbling, angry out of no where accusations all of that. I have a few friends and a couple who know the depths of his problem but, largely, we live in a bubble. It's not healthy and it's not doing him any favors for me/ us to live in this isolation. It's a way that I am protecting him and I acknowledge that. But, it's hurting me. Does anyone feel like this too? Has anyone worked out how to break out of the dome? There's so much shaming of those who love addicts- it's a huge part of my hiding in this little bubble for so long. I tried the Al-anon in my area and hated it- too preachy and formulaic for my taste. He's not at a point of getting help- facing all the things he's lost and horrible things he's done while drinking is just too much for him and he has almost no other means of coping so, the idea that I or anyone else would expect him to quit drinking, let alone be successful in quitting would be comedic if it wasn't so sad. But, whether he gets well or not any time in the forseeable future, I need to get well. Need to get out more, make some new friends (hopefully supportive ones) etc. anyone done this? Honestly, I'm scared. But, the fear of getting back out into the world is about equal to the pain of isolation with him at this point. He's the classic amazing sober, mean, mean drunk binge drinker. Anyway, hi everyone. Thanks for reading.
