My husband and I have been together for almost 10 years. We first met when I was 19 and he was 23. I didn't realize that drinking was a problem for him until just the past few years. As we grew up and I started drinking less, he never slowed down. What used to be drinking while going out, became drinking at home, which became drinking on the job. He got probation at work the first time but a year later he got caught again and lost his job. He's been unemployed for 2 years now and since then there has been nothing to slow his alcoholism. What used to be days at a bingers are now weeks. He gets sick anytime he tries sobering up or after a few weeks binging.
He knows he has a problem but doesnt do anything about it. The longest he stayed sober was a month, but as always just one drink and we are back to square one. I am so scared that one day i am going to come home and he'll have alcohol poisoning or something terrible will happen. I'm at the end of my rope and just don't know how much more I have left to give. I feel so bitter and angry and sometimes I feel like I'm losing myself. It's all so overwhelming sometimes and hard because no matter what I can't fix the problem, he has to.
Lately, I feel like its gotten even worse, him waking up at 4 am now and drinking and passing out before I even leave for work. I don't know what to do. I feel as though I'm at the end of the rope and am left with nothing but an ultimatum, rehab or I leave. The hardest part is knowing I'd have to stick to my word and actually leave. I just don't know what to do anymore...
Any advice would be welcome or even just experiences.

I am sorry you had to find this group but hope you find solace in knowing you are not alone. I won't give advice because we all have to figure this out for ourselves. What I have learned for me is that I have to worry about me and my life because I do not have any control or influence on my alcoholic husband's life. I can only control my reaction to his actions and I can only decide what I want for my life. He has to make his own decisions which may or may not coincide with mine. The hardest part is that I know my alcoholic husband is not sober enough to make choices and the alcohol is deterioriating his brain. It's so hard to walk away from someone who you think will die from this. Reading the posts here and hearing what other women go through helps. You are not alone. You are smart and kind and a good person whatever he says or does. You have to think about you and what you want for a life; and then decide if you are OK if he is no longer in it. I am not there yet so don't have any advice. I just know that my therapist reminds me every time that I have to think about me ... because I am all I can control.

Please take a few baby steps today. Find out where you can attend Alanon meetings near you. There are also online meetings, but nothing can substitute for meeting with living breathing people. Second, buy the book GETTING THEM SOBER by Toby Rice Drews--it costs less than $9 and read it. She will explain what is happening and how you can respond. These are two small things you can do today. Unfortunately, the only person you can change in this situation is you. When you start there, anything is possible. When you try to change other people, everything is impossible.

I had the rehab or leave moment, he went to rehab.....because when I picked him up from jail for his 2nd DUI, he was given only those two choices. He went willingly. It is a SLOW LONG process for them to admit they have the problem and then it really doesn't fix everything else, but it is a starting point. I never imagined how difficult this process could be. One thing I have learned, do something (1 thing ) something small for yourself EVERYDAY. Take 5 minutes, change your environment, whatever you have to do to keep your sanity. And you may only feel sane for an hour, but it's one hour at a time......
