So my AH wants to withdrawal on his own tomorrow. He’s drinking tonight because he’s afraid of the withdrawal. I’m worried! I don’t think this is a good idea...I think he should be in the care of a doctor. Any advice? We’ve gone through the inpatient treatment before. It’s embarrassing for both of us, but at least it’s safe. I’m not qualified fo this. I’m happy he’s wanting to get better but I’m so disappointed he let it get this far.

faith, I would think he would need to be in the care of a doctor. My AH hasn't ever lasted past a couple of days sober and just that time makes me scared and uncomfortable. It may also depend on how much and how often he drinks and how his body reacts to not having it. Its very disappointing but at least he's admitting theirs a problem. Good luck!

I agree with DSTRICK. He needs to be in a doctor's care because of the withdrawal. I understand that can be dangerous for some, depending on the person. I would not take on that responsibility. You will be in my thoughts. I hope all goes well.

He decided I should take him to the ER. Which we did and they gave him supplements to help with the withdrawal and I stayed home with him yesterday. He’s himself the man I love. I just hope and pray he can stay strong enough to fight this disease. He’s been reaching out to some AA buddies who have been really helpful. Thank you all for your help. The last thing I want is for my AH to lose his life to this illness. I have faith we can do this.

definitely needs a doctors care, especially if he's a heavy drinker, because of the implications. my AH has bad withdrawal symptoms but not DTs, he's not a "from morning to night" hard liquor guy but he definitely drinks too much in the evenings and gets the shakes, chills, headaches, etc. it's can be pretty dangerous detoxing by yourself, but he also needs the support of people who are trained to deal with this kind of thing. to me, it's ridiculous when they say they want to do it by themselves, and i feel like it's another ploy to win us onto their side. if he wants to quit, he needs to accept help. very few people quit without assistance. even if he just goes in to see his doctor on a weekly basis,.
DSTRICK
that's good that he decided to seek professional help. Good luck!
