My husband has been a binge whiskey (2-3 pints a night) drinker on and off for the past 20 + years. He quit for a little over two years from 2012 - 2014, he started back up around January of 2014, since then he goes for sometimes 2-3 months of every night drinking and maybe takes a night off here and there but for the most part it’s every night, this last stent has gone on for a good 6 mo this or so. His tolerance level is so high now that he even has trouble passing out for very long. He will start at 7am when it’s legal to sell alcohol and pass out by 9am, sleep until about 10 or 11, go back to the store and start all over again, pass out by 1 or 2 and then wake up before I get home from work and had already gone back to the store again and on the verge of passing out when I get home. On those days he is drinking closer to 3-4 pints and probably a 6 pack of beer just to chase it down...he has a great job for almost 20 years now so that’s not an issue. But he gets a lot of time off and on his days off that what it looks like. I am have become somewhat immune to the sloppy drunk version of him because it’s pretty much every day living. What I don’t understand and I’m having a hard time with is that I seem to be the scape goat of mean and drunken words that he never remembers at night and now for the past 3 days he just quit cold turkey, I have been keeping a very close eye on him as he is going through serious withdrawals, shaking, profusely sweating, agitated and very grumpy. So once again I seem to be the scape goat now that he quit for a few days. He has been so distant with me and almost treats me like I’m the reason he is going through withdrawals. When he is drinking or when he is sober he goes to work and is nice as can be to everyone there, joking around, smiling and saying good morning like he is the nicest guy around. I am the one cleaning up after him, cutting up his food so he doesn’t choke while he is so drunk he doesn’t even know where he is, listening to him belittle me, making sure he gets to bed all while I’m taking care of the house and everything else. Then when he quits I am the one rubbing his back and trying to help him feel better through the withdrawals. So why am I the one who gets treated like crap. I asked him very nicely to please don’t be so grumpy with me, I know your going through a lot right now but please just be a little nicer. He responded with you do this every time I stop drinking for a couple of days. I really don’t get it.....and I know he is only quitting for a few days so his tolerance isn’t so high because he doesn’t feel that euphoria feeling when he gets to that point, so he stops and then starts right back up...some advice would be nice...thank you;)
