So far, so good - my AH has not had a drop in 60 days. He is really trying hard, however I fear that he will give in eventually. I just have to keep positive! In the meantime, the issues that lead to my "breakdown" and leaving him no choice but to stop drinking is making me wonder a little. How much does alcohol affect a person's memory? Bc my husband has always had way better memory than me. And now he is watching an old series we used to watch together yrs ago, called the XFiles. He completely does not remember some of the episodes, and I do. He would swear that we never watched them, but then I would predict the next scene and he would be shocked. Both shocked that I was right and that he really didn't remember! Also, over the years of his drinking, he concentrated heavily on the negative and not the positive. So when you bring up something he always thinks of the bad things related to the events and not the good. I was, for example, reminding him of how when we used to be involved in our bedroom activities, he would look in the mirror and be so proud of how we looked together. He completely does not remember that. He just developed a very negative attitude towards me as the years went by, in a way that it made me feel like I was a disappointment to him. His sex drive went thru the roof in the middle of when our kids were really little - still babies. And all women know how our mommy instincts take over and that most of us don't desire sex as much, especially when we are nursing and getting up 6 times a night. So this past fall he finally said how sex has just been "satisfying" and not awesome our whole married life. I was so upset. And as time went on I started to figure out that I think it was the alcohol that made him think this way. What do you gals think??
Chapelle.I thougt that when my Ah went through detox and rehab he would become the person or the sober person I used to know..My husband is not the same man I married. I think the alcohol had some affect on his brain,we are going to a neuroligist tomorrow. He had an MRI a few weeks back. His memory is not the same. I have seen a change in his problem solving skills. He is also depressed. I thought that once he stopped drinking we could get out more ,do more, live life. Now it could be because of his age. He is 64,But I cant help thinking without the alcohol he would be doing so much better. I miss my vivacious, funny sexy man I married 14 years ago.
i am so sorry for your situation novscorp. my husband is still only 39 so I think he will be ok, its just a question of how much memory has actually been erased.
I think ah can only rembember their fantasy sex when they
We're drunk it was always the best. .....for who... Right
I have heard this so many times it is the norm now.
In his mind he has not changed any ...I have..
I try to remind him that in order to have fulfilling sex you have to
Fill loved and needed and respected and safe. If you don't then
You are only having sex to get him to quit bothering you. It's not
Satisfying to you at all just going thru the motions.
I have to keep myself on guard to not allow myself to get comfortable
With any man due to the fact I know I'm very vonerable for now.
This is a sad place to be
My husband seems to have a pretty good memory too but I completely believe that alcohol can affect long and short term memory. My AH tends to blame his work load on his bad memory but I know differently. He is close to 50 years old and has been drinking since he was a teenager. I worry about the long term effects as he ages. The comment your husband made about your sex life is probably more of an affect of the alcoholic brain than anything else. My AH will sometimes blurt out hurtful things that he doesn't really mean because of his years of drinking. Instead of getting upset when he says stuff like your sex life has never been awesome why not ask him what you can both do to improve things. I have found this approach to be very helpful in our relationship. When my AH complains or mentions something that is not quite right in his mind I ask if he has suggestions on how to improve it. Sometimes he comes up with ideas and other times he will admit that it's not as bad as he was making it out to be.
He may be suffering from Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome It's called wet brain and it is caused from a vitamin B1 deficiency. It should go away in 60 days depending on how heavy a drinker he was. if he continues to drink heavily it can cause primitive brain damage. I know because I am living that life right now, and it's no fun you might want to get him in to see a doctor they can help with this. You can also Google it to and get some better answers Good Luck to you
At this point your husband is due for a check-up with a complete blood work up. He might be suffering from thiamine as well as other vitamin deficiencies. If your husband has Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome he needs immediate treatment. It can be permanent and the sooner he gets treatment the better.
