Hi all. I have a question. My husband has been a heavy drinker for over 17 years. For the past 14 years, he drinks well over a fifth of 100 proof a day. I've noticed a few times that his bowel movements are like coffee grinds and the other day he coughed up pink phlegm. He's also a smoker, so he has a horrible hacking/choking cough. I wish he would go to a doctor but he 'doesn't have a problem'. Does anyone have an opinion of what this could be?? If anything?? I'm at my wits end because I've already lost my son and my Mom since last year and I'm scared he's next.
Thanks.
I've read about this. It could be that he has a bleeding ulcer. It will cause coffee grind looking stool and blood etc., It's nothing to mess around with but I know how hard it can be to get an AH to go to a doctor.
I'm terribly sorry you have suffered the loss of you son and mother. I hope you can find strength and peace. God Bless.
He never complains of any stomach pain. Then again, I'm not sure he would. I know he has numerous bowel movements, even getting up in the middle of the night. Don't mean to be gross, but just hoping someone might be experiencing this with their AH.
Thanks yw249. It's definitely been rough. And I can't help but think the worst.
Grape, I'm so sorry that you are put in a situation to worry like this. Our alcoholic spouses do awful things to us mentally. He may have a serious medical issue that before too long will result in hospitalization if he doesn't seek help soon. Anything that looks like dried coffee grounds is usually old dried blood coming out from inside. It's not good. I'm not trying to worry you further, but I think you already know deep down that it isn't good. Your spouse is trying to protect his habit by his denial as best as possible. Getting them to admit they have a problem isn't something you can make him do. Are you getting support? Are you going to Alanon? As hard as it may be, you must turn your focus on yourself and get yourself some help and surround yourself with support -- you need it and it is the only thing you have control over anyway. If you have been to alanon you will know this, if you haven't you need to know this: you did cause it, you cant control it, and you cant cure him. You can't as much as you want to, its a proven impossibility. Try to talk to him about the danger he is in medically when he has a sober moment, then please get yourself some support.

That's what I'm so worried about. He never goes a day without drinking and I know he couldn't quit on his own, even if he wanted to. It would kill him, then again it is anyway. I have been to alanon once but I'm not in a position to go right now. I've had several car accidents and scared to drive a lot, plus I still have pain when I drive due to neck injuries. That and I'm broke because I can't work right now. It's just been a nightmare for the past 19 months. I keep telling myself it's all happened for a reason but it's hard to figure out what that reason is. I just can't help to worry about what's going to happen next. The holidays don't help because I miss my son and now my Mom. It's awful to say, but everyday I wonder if this will be the day something happens?! I was in therapy but when I lost my health insurance, I had to quit. Thank you for listening!!
Peace and hugs to you!!
My husband had the same issue only he was passing blood to. Not good
When we got to the hospital he went into 3 seizure 1 otter the other.
Due to so much blood loss.
This is soo hard on us to have to wait on them to decide to go to the hospital
Just yesterday I hE to rush my husband to the ER for possible drug overdose.
All he was worried about was me making him look like a idiot..
He has been seeing and hearing thing for days but he is ok.
Medically he checked out but his med gout was way off.
He gets mad at me for trying to control his meds but if I don't he will hurt or kill himself.
