What is a normal marriage? Would I know it, if I found it? My husband and I have been together since I was 17 years old. Twenty-two years later and three kids and things are so unstable! He is away from home on another binge! Trying to figure out how to end it. I don't want a divorce, but I know it is heading that way. Trying to figure out how to afford it??? Where to start - even if I went through with it. Asking myself, "how did I get here?" I hate loving someone that you have been with for soooo long, but hating their behavior and even a part of them. I hate my behavior! He couldn't stay sober and I am bitter over everything! I have to be responsible for everything and it has not made a difference if I let things go - he still won't take care of things. The smell of beer, the sound of an opening beer can, the drunk husband, the financial problems that drinking is causing, the staying away from home for 2-12 days, the lack of responsibility, the lack of a good sexual and emotional connection are weighing on me! I feel lonely even when he is here. I am feeling guilty for my lack of trying in my marriage. I feel beaten down and tired!!! The sad thing is.... I know that even if I get a divorce that I won't get any help from him! Looks like a long road no matter which way I go! I guess one road might have a little more peace - eventually???

I am sooo sorry! I know how you feel. I haven't been married as long as you and my AH and I do not have kids together (we both have kids from a previous marriage), but during the 4 1/2 years we have been together I have experienced many of the same things you mentioned above. Leaving for days and days on a binge, not knowing where he was, financial problems because of it, him being totally irresponsible and not caring about me having the whole burden of things. That is NOT the way it is supposed to be. We have been seperated a month and although I miss him and know that I still love him, I think we will definitely be divorcing sometime soon. I don't want to look back 10 years from now and be saying the same thing - and I know I will. He will never truly change. He will for a time, but he ALWAYS goes back. I can do this - I know I can. I have God, friends and family with me. You can do it too. It just depends how bad you want it. It will be hard, especially in the beginning, but it does get a little easier every day. Some days I am actually doing great! Without God and the support I have though, it would be hard. Think about your future and what you really want and go for it. You don't want to keep wasting time with someone who is probably never going to change. In your heart you know what you need to do.

It's hard. I have 15 years in and 3 kids. You will not change him, all you can do is change you. Either you become OK with your life the way it is and may become (coz it will get worse) or you become OK with YOU and do what you need to do to keep YOU and your kids OK. It's hard work to get to that point and doesn't happen over night. It has taken me a year struggling through this, seeing a therapist and going to Al anon, but you need to get YOU better first before you try and deal with the other. Hugs. It's hard but we can find the strength within ourselves to be happy and create a better life.
