So Labor day weekend I went to Disney with my daughter to celebrate out 4yr olds birthday. AH stayed home, i'm used to him not wanting to go and to be honest things seem to go better. But theirs still the fact that he's drunk texting me while i'm trying to drive and when I don't answer he gets more annoying. So I decided to ignore him, the next day I told him that I wasn't going to spend her weekend arguing with him. If he needed to talk we would talk when I returned and when he's sober! He then started blowing up our 14 yr olds phone which I could learn alot from her since she completley ignores him!
When I returned home he was already drunk and since I only have the morning sober good byes as he's leaving for work, I haven't had a good time to talk to him. I still refuse to talk while hes drunk. But I had my chance this past Sunday as I was leaving for church I told him how it I feel, after 31 years i've always tippy toed around talking not wanting to hurt his feeling and trying to sugar coat everything. No more I shouldn't have to pretend anymore. I told him how his drinking has made me resent him and how I wait for him to fall asleep before I go to bed, I don't see the man that I feel in love with and i'm not that cold heart B that he want's to make me out to be when he's drinking if so I would have already kicked him out or moved out. I will not allow his drinking to consume me any longer, and I will not allow it to hurt these girls like it did our children. Can things change? It's intirely up to him, I will not insist that he quit drinking. Because that would only make him resent me. At this point I don't even know if he quit drinking how I would feel. The damage is there and I don't know how or if it can be repaired. I told him that i'm not being mean I just have to seperate myself from it, I don't drink but I feel like i'm the addict. No longer i'm to old for this crap and life is to short!
How did you feel after you told him? Good for you, and good for your family! Honestly, sometimes I think after all that we put up with it doesn't matter if we love them anymore because the person you really have to love is yourself. You are addicted, at least I know I feel like an addict when it comes to him. Like I'm addicted to this! You made such a brave step. Amazing! Congratulations! Time to get YOUR life back, right? Since he's gone off living his own and not giving a damn!
It felt great! He had a tear in his eye and usually thats all it takes for me to start back tracking and give into him. But I stood my ground and kept talking. He stayed in bed all day and didn't drink until that night when I went to my daughters house and he drank after work yesterday. For some reason I think he thinks that as long as he's nice he can continue to drink. That used to work, but no longer. It doesn't matter if he's nice, annoying or mean I can't do it anymore. I'm tired of snooping around to see if he has a bottle stashed or trying to catch eye contact to see if he's already had a few. Its his life he's going to do what ever he wants. So i'm determined to do the same! Thank you for the encouragement need all I can get....
Perfect post for me this very early bleary eyed morning! I'm done! I've been done for a very long time.... you perfectly described my experience! Thank you for validating. I had managed to move forward for a while, but a 3 month period of sobriety tricked me into a place of hopefulness. I should have known better. Alcohol always wins.
jms, we can't allow alcohol to win! For to so long now i've allowed it to control my every move, I don't drink so why should I be broken down like this.... I have no self esteem anymore, I can't handle confrontation at home or at work. I'm 51 yrs old and I can't stand up for myself at all! I think of the woman I was before him and alcohol. What happened to me? I crave so much more, I get jealous when I see normal couples holding hands and laughing. I know that no couple is perfect but for me perfect would be someone that doesn't need alcohol to function someone that really hears me and I don't have to repeat myself over and over again. Someone that I can actually depend on when I need something! Is this just a fantasy?
That is awesome. I weeble wobble on playing detective with my AH. Part of me knows that I can't be Inspector Gadget all day every day. Another part of me gets so mad at the lies (I KNOW when he's lying - why does he even try??) that then I want to find the evidence so I can feel validated that I was right. You are doing the right thing, though - letting that **** GO. I'm sure working on it.
I think doing things without your AH is great. The few times my daughter and I have gone to dinner without my husband, it's been fun. I don't know if your husband is like mine, but it's like everything relies on what he wants. When it's just us, we can relax and get in some good quality time.
I think couples like you describe are definitely out there. I guess we can stay and pray, hoping that these men that we love will come around and give those things to us OR we can leave and wander out into that great abyss. I sure don't want to. I didn't go into this marriage believing it would end in divorce over something as stupid as alcohol.
PEACE, its hard to break that habit of investigating, some days I catch myself sneaking out to his truck and looking for bottles to see how much he's drank that day like when he's only drinking beer around me. I know him to well, he's a whiskey drinker 1st beer is just something he tries to pull over on me to think he's trying! I maybe a fool but i'm not stupid....
Yes I go without him as much as possible crazy thing is I used to complain that drinking kept him from doing with me now that he actually ask me to go to dinner I refuse because I know he's going to be drunk and embarrass the crap out of me. Maybe I put to much thought into it? Maybe i'm not fun? I just think theirs a time to grow up and not act like your a teen getting drunk for the 1st time!
And I have to admit I toy around with the idea of finding that love that I dream of, I have a dear friend that is going through a divorce I look at him and wonder why??? He doesn't drink! He's a good man and wants that same kind of love. What is the problem? It's so hard not to talk to him and have feelings. I know deep down nothing can be, i'm married. I haven't made that choice to leave yet. I'm so confused. Confused but not stupid! NO NO NO I keep telling myself, 30 yrs is a long time.
Yes Alcohol is horrible why can't I be #1??? Just ranting Ladies I'm sorry! I just see myself getting older and him continuing to choose drinking over us.
Well unfortunately we have to accept the fact that they may never change. Alcohol will always be there. So we have to ask ourselves when we have had enough bull shit and leave. Its so hard. 30 years is a lot of time to invest in a marriage. You have my support, and im so proud of yoy for telling him how you feel! Setting those boundaries are important
