So my alcoholic boyfriend got arrested with a DUI in January. He lost his license, had court and now has to go to treatment classes three times a week. He has not been taking it seriously since the beginning of them and has still been drinking on and off. Not as bad as he used to, but enough. He finally said he was going to really try and after 5 days of being sober, he started telling me how good it felt and how he likes thatwe don’t fight and he can see how alcohol makes our relationship bad. Well on the 6th day sober night- he went and bought an 8 pack and drank 1 beer and dumped the rest out. I was not home. I came home today and had a surprise for him for his 1 week sober (from what I thought). I showed him and he told me that he drank and broke his sobriety. I broke down. I started hyperventilating and crying. I had to leave the house and just catch my breath. Since it was late at night I didn’t want to go walking the streets so I got in my car and drove down the street to a well lit parking lot and sat there. Well in the 30 mins that I was gone, he drove to come find me- got pulled over- got arrested and is currently sitting in jail waiting for his brother to bail him out. I am so run down and beat down from all of this over the past 2 years of him being an alcoholic I am just at a loss. I absolutely LOVE him when he is sober and is making good choices, but all it takes is something small like this to completely screw us over. I don’t know if I can handle this anymore or if I can handle always wondering if I need to come up with bail money. What am I suppose to do? And if I should end it, how? This isn’t like a normal breakup. Both people still really love each other. I just don’t think I can handle it anymore.
I’m so sorry you are going through this. The reality is ince an alcoholic always an alcoholic. You’re going to have to deal with this for the rest of your life and constantly wonder when the next slip up will be. We just count our blessings when we have the good days. My AH is on a 30 day roll. Everyday is a battle. I hated it when he was checked out drunk and buligerant, and now I find it difficult to be apart during his AA program. We both work all day, and I still come home make dinner tend to the kids, and pretty much get ready for bed while he’s walking in from working his sobriety program. I’m thankful he’s not drinking, but this is the reality of my life. He’s still never going to be here for me emotionally or physically. Just financially. It’s hard to swallow, but I just take it one day at a time. I hope things work out for you both. You deserve to be happy, we all do.
You are right Faith. When an alcoholic is drinking everything is revolved around alcohol. People in the Alcoholics life have to deal with it. But even in sobriety, it's all about the Alcoholics sobriety and staying sober and still focused on the alcoholic. What about the wife and children? What about family? It's a selfish addiction, it's always about them. You never come first.
I'd say if he is just a Boyfriend no marriage or kids get out now. Maybe he will sober up, but he can do it on his own. And maybe after he is sober you two can find each other again.
Hugs
