im so angry. It’s Christmas Eve and my husband decides that he’s had a long day and deserves a drink. Even though two nights ago I told him I was angry at him because he didn’t keep promises because of his drinking- and tonight he drinks again. And I’m so angry and upset because I’m SO USED TO IT and I’m in a situation where this is so familiar to me... I’m really angry. How dare he? Tonight I was supposed to go to a Christmas Eve service with my mum who had been driving all day to be able to be with us for Christmas- and my husband drinks. He had one drink (equivalent of at least 3 or 4) and I said if he drank, I couldn’t go out because we have an 11 month old son and I can’t leave him alone with him if he’s been drinking. His reaction was so over the top- he started pacing, punching his boxing bag, storming around the house- then said he was going to have a drink anyway. I told him that if he had a drink I would consider it one of the most selfish things he had ever done because it’s Christmas and because celebrating that is important to me. He said fine, I could go... but then mum texted and said she couldn’t make it and she was giving me a lift so therefore i couldn’t go either. So my husband had the green light to go and have a drink which he did- and now he’s asleep on his lazy boy. Merry Christmas to me, and great that he’ll be all blah in the morning when it’s our sons first Christmas and we have so much to do. I’m sorry to be all melancholic and self-centred- I swear I’m not usually like this- I just really needed to rant. 10 years... same old but I feel my coping is getting less and less. I told him tonight that I don’t think we’ll make it together because we’re arguing so much and it’s awful for our little boy to see that even though we try not to let it affect him... I’m just so done. And I’m so gutted that this man I love cant see what’s happening.
Vent away! I totally get it. My husband ruined Christmas last year by doing the same thing and this year he chose to do it on the 23rd, so he’s hungover Christmas Eve. I guess he thought that was better, but I’m dragging him to the service and guilting him all the way, because why not! I didn’t create this mess.
They are so selfish. We don’t have kids, so I can only imagine how that feels but I wish I had a child to spend it with rather then his selfish ass, so consider yourself blessed. Your son won’t remember, so it gives your husband time to get it together.
They need to have consequences though. Right now, I’m all about making it very uncomfortable for him. He needs to know how it feels.
This is the place to vent. This seems to be the one place where you can actually care about yourself for once and not have the alcoholic always be the one taken care of. I am so sick of the selfish behavior too! I have kids so i totally get the not able to leave if they are drinking. As much as that sucks, remember you are an amazing mother and parent. You put your child first and you should be proud!
I am new to this site and this is my first communication. I understand completely! We have a Christmas Eve party, I do all the work and he is like the jolly old fellow having a grand ole time. He gets drunk, but everyone just think he is having fun celebrating. When they leave, he turns into this critical person who just wants to rant about anything that pops into his mind. Right now I enjoy the peaceful times and endure the rest. Please take care of yourself and be good to yourself. Take care!!!
This is such a familiar story. Why do we all continue to live this life? I’m so tired of it, yet I stay put. My children are grown and on their own and I could support myself. I guess keeping the family together is priority; yet, what kind of family are we all holding intact. We are strong enough to take care of our AHs and endure so much, but yet we keep the cycle going by sticking around. It seems to get harder each day.
I feel for you....lately it seems as though my husband and his drinking do nothing but disappoint and ruin every attempt at having a nice holiday or special event. He has missed countless concerts, ceremonies etc. for our boys, holiday dinners, parties, special occasions etc. It is so disheartening and best to just not plan on them participating. Less disappointment. Hugs.
