I posted here last summer, several times. I wanted to give an update, as well as remind myself of why I am doing what I am doing. I am fixing my own life. I started seeing a therapist in summer. I went to alanon a few times. I have gone back to school to complete my degree. I am making plans for my own future which don't involve my AH. The only thing that didn't work for me was alanon. I'm okay with that. Not everything has to be right for everybody.
I'm exhausted most of the time because on top of doing everything else, I am a fulltime student. But whenever I feel down about how much I have on my plate right now, I remind myself of where I am heading. I don't engage at all with the AH. I eat dinner before he even gets home. I am aware that he's going out drinking several nights per week, and drinking at home, too, and thinking he is hiding it, but I no longer make myself sick over it. He won't be in my life forever. No sense me getting worked up about him. I've completely given up on him. If he manages to some day get sober, well good for him. Then maybe our kids can have a relationship with him. But if he doesn't, well I'm working my tail off to be the good parent that they need. I think they are at the age when they recognize who they can count on, and who's just an idiot wasting the last precious years he has to be involved in their lives actively. It is sad that we've been married for 30 years, and this is the end of the road for me. But I don't feel terribly sad, more excited for my own future without him. I don't know how I will get from here, to there (the there with him gone). But I am trusting that I will get there. Mostly, my focus now is on me, and on my kids. AH is an adult. If he wants to make his own life better, he knows how. I no longer feel it is my duty to guide him into correct decisions.
Right on don't ever give up. I was working full-time, full-time nursing student, and I have two kids ages 8 and 5 at the time. I was able to pull it off exhausted and weary but I was able to do it and I got my degree so I could leave my husband if he didn't quit drinking. So far he has been sober for nine months so we are good but I had set it up to the point where I can go whenever I want if things aren't working out. It's so important to concentrate on yourself and rebuilding yourself as a person I feel like when your married to an alcoholic you kind of lose who you are and what you are about because you spend most of your time trying to fix their problem. Proud of you hang in there.
OMG! I could have written this exact post!! I have been married for 26., almost 27 years to a man who loves his alcohol. My children are all grown, but, telling them that we are divorcing is still my biggest fear. But, you are so correct!! You will get there, and so will I!!! Love and prayers to you, to us, to ALL of us fighting this fight!!!! Keep going!!
That is a wonderful update! Making steps toward a happy life really helps build up the self esteem lost through the years. It is very exciting to look forward to your future. You go girl!!
Thank you, ladies! I'm having a crisis of confidence, today. But, do you know what? I know that somehow I will manage through this. That is what has changed with me. I used to doubt my ability to get through anything, and so I stayed in a miserable situation because it felt easier than facing uncertainty. I will get through today, and this semester in school, and manage with my job, and do the taxes, and all of it. I will do it, because doing it is much better than staying where I am.
Sending prayers and hugs out for everyone, here. This is such a hard life. It feels so unfair at times. But it is making me stronger than I was even before AH. I pray that you find that source of strength, too.
Good for you. I recently separated from my husband , no longer do I have to fight with him, accuse him, go crazy over the drinking. We been together 25 years. I sometimes wish I could've left sooner, but it is because of where I am at today career wise that I could make the move and also because kids are older. Stick to your plans and you will get here too. I'm nkt saying is easy, because family was so important to me, but it is so much better for my own sanity and well being!
