Hello everybody, I would like your advise and support in terms of explaining or giving me ideas on how to detach from an AH. I married him 9 months ago and around March, I found out he was a functioning alcoholic (alcoholic anyways) and ever since he has been drinking wine almost every day. He blames me for his drinking coming back to his life (apparently this is something he has been dealing with for many years), he calls me ungrateful for not thanking him for paying the bills and for buying a house which we we were supposes to remodel together (it has not happened), he insults me, bellitles me, calls me names, puts me down and says im the worst mistake ever....yet i dont understand why is he blaming me for? I have no desire to have any kind of physical contact with him and I try to stay as "invisible" as possible in order to avoid any confrontations, but sometimes I get mad at him. He's abusive and I dont want to live with a man like that, uncapable of loving, full of lies and destructive, however; for personal reasons, I still have to live with him for about 3 more months. I dont need his money, or his support, we have no kids, he doesnt want to get help, and I swear he hates me, so I have no reason to stay in a lonely marriage....how do I detach from him? What do I have to do to not let his behavior affect me? And how do I stop being so angry? I feel betrayed and lied to!
Detaching is basically doing your own thing, while still living with the alcoholic, much like roommates. Spend time with your friends, make meals only for yourself, do your own laundry, etc. People can do this for years, and often do if they are financially dependent on the alcoholic, or do not believe in divorce. Personally, I still feel that having an alcoholic in the same home, still adds a great deal of stress. Plus when there are children around, detachment gives them a warped view of what a marriage should be. I would prefer and recommend divorce over staying in a situation like that with kids around (based on my personal experience).
