My husband says I treat him differently when he drinks or I suspect he has. I don't completely disagree with this. Some time I don't even realize that I am. Other times I try to act normal but I feel as if I'm walking on egg shells. I have been burned in the past and can't seem to know how to talk or bring it up to him. We just go round and round. He says he can't bring anything up to me without me defending myself. I don't know what to do.
So many of us in the same situation. I’ve been walking on those egg shell for too long .
My AH and I have developed the WORST communication skills, which of course is my fault!
What to do? Realize that it is near impossible to have a normal conversation with an alcoholic! They are master manipulators. Someone told me today that I am banging my head against a brick wall and wondering why I’m bleeding!
Try to detach your emotions from his drinking. Set boundaries for when you can safely and comfortably talk to him and never engage in confrontation if you can ( I am horrible at all of this but I want to keep practicing.
If it helps, you are not alone .
of course you treat him differently, we're all guilty of that but how else do we treat them???? Its impossible to treat them the same as sober when they are complete jerks and you never know what to say or do to keep from setting them off. No communicating with a drunk! Take care of your self his addiction belongs to him don't allow it to take control of you. Its taken me 30 years to figure out that beating myself up isn't worth it.
