Having been married for 16 years to the love of my life (not first marriages for either of us) I have to say enough is enough. He was an high functioning alocoholic when we met (i never even realised he was one) but the last few years he has really gone down hill. We have seperated anf got back together so many times, me believing his promises everytime, but I can t od it any more. How do you stop loving someone ? I am heart broken
You dont stop loving them. I always say to my husband I will always love him but I will break my own heart and leave him because of the person he becomes when he drinks.
Unfortunately he is drunk more and more now days, more days than he is sober, so I guess I've already lost him and I will mourn the man I lost but I will always love him.
I feel every bit of your heartbreak.
Sending you a hug x
I completely understand...it really is a situation that's easier said than done..its a constant roller coaster of highs and lows and when you're at your highs you see the person you fell in love with and just hold onto the little hope that things can change. We as alcoholics spouses have to be real and accepting with ourselves. Accepting the fact that things arnt going to be different. I too struggle with the same feelings you're having. That guard you let down when you decided to love and trust your partner...you're going to have to put that guard back up and protect your feelings and yourself. For me..when you have that guard up and start working on yourself you will realize your self worth and won't tolerate that anymore. This is something I'm learning myself in my process of leaving my husband. Sincerly best of luck to you
