How all of this affects the brain - and what will
Chapelle
ok, so I had a very important question answered on my previous post, and was happy to hear that if my AH drank heavily one night, the alcohol is still in his system and although he isn't necessarily drunk, it still can have an effect on his behavior and comments.
Now, what do you say about "overall?" Let's say my AH does actually stay away from alcohol for a yr, will he be a little different? Will he be closer to his former self? Do alcoholics go day to day in an "altered state" even if they don't drink everyday? Bc my AH didn't drink every day, he drank heavily maybe 4 or 5 days a week. Will his body detoxify and clear his head as time goes on, or does all of the yrs of alcohol consumption permanently alter his personality? I know this is far fetched, but I am so upset about realizing how unhappy he makes me *Sometimes*
Lastly, it would help if some of you who have had your AH's stop drinking for a period of time to answer this question - what should I expect from him NOT drinking? I would assume that the fact that he doesn't have alcohol to turn to on a stressful day that his anger will come out somewhere? He hasn't touched it in 30 days. My friend said that he will begin to blame me for everything, if he hasn't already, which he already has in the past, MANY times, and I am sure this is common.
He has been doing fairly well, with a few slips - and today was a bad one. I am not going to tell the whole story, but long story short, his brand new Samsung cell phone got wet and he blamed me for it. Ttally not my fault - I pick up everything after him in this house, and I am not guarding his cell phone ontop of it all. Anyway, do you think this is what my friend is talking about? Bc this is how he has behaved even in the past whenever something has gone wrong. I just don't understand him - I explained to him how it wasn't my fault, and he still doesn't get it. I seriously think the alcohol made a hole in his brain when it comes to rationalizing my emotions. One day he is so concerned about me, and the next day its like he could care less. He has always put me on such emotional rollercoasters. Anyway, He didnt apologize and later on sort of acted normal, but I was the one who reached out and held his hand first, just to break the ice (we took kids to the beach). I just can't tell the difference anymore between the alcoholic husband and the real husband =(

Hugs and prayers for us all
I am SO sorry if I'm wrong about your AH possibly drinking still, but it just sounded like I was reading my own posts. This was only a few months ago, he hit a "rock bottom" for him 2 weeks ago when there were two days in a row that he couldn't even completely function at work because he decided to start drinking mid morning & didn't gauge it. So, at the end of the second day he called & asked me to take him to rehab. After 3 days of detox in the hospital (those were AWFUL) & 7 days in rehab (which he has LOVED, even though it's hard for him to be away), he is doing AMAZING! It is SO good to have the REAL him back so far. I took our 4, 7 & 9 year old to visit him yesterday & they said they wanted to "steal" him because they said he was all better! He was having fun with us, laughing and he stayed awake the WHOLE time ;)
My husband was never the type to be angry or ugly to me before he became an alcoholic, but after some classes/lectures that he & I have gone to at the facility, we have realized it was just that the fog he was in all the time (even if he wasn't drunk) altered the way he thought & the things he said were just a reflection of his unhappiness & his own bad self-image at the time. I hope this helps & PLEASE feel free to ask me any questions you might have....HUGS to you!!!
Alcoholism is a brain disease, it is highly relapsable, and gets progressively worse with time. I don't own my husband's recovery, he does (if he wants it), and I can't fix him I can only fix myself.
I hope you (easier said than done) turn your focus to yourself, get help and heal from the destruction of your husband's behaviour. I spent most of my 24 year marriage worrying, nagging, yelling, silent treatment, and trying to get him help for his drinking. Nothing worked and I got really emotionally unhealthy myself. I wish I had a magic wand, the disease is horrid.
Get off the emotional roller coaster and take care of you, learn about the disease it will help you better understand it. Hugs!
