Hi ladies. I have been blessed with several years of a sober husband. 3.5 years. And I am back bc the alcoholic has returned. I am almost shocked how quickly the old signs have returned. The eye drops, the mouthwash, the BOTTLES IN THE CAR, the staggering. The stench. Yech. I am sooooo sad right now.
He was a nasty drunk and I bet he will be again. It took (in this order) rehab, 2 DUI's, separation, loss of job, house arrest, jail, house arrest, hospitalization, 1 dv arrest (not physical, but still DV), losing joint custody of his older kids, and therapy to get him sober. Why TF would he drink again?
He said it relaxes him. I want to punch him in the face. We have a 2 year old and 5 year old. I should have left him after the first time.
Sober him is a good man. I am kicking myself right now cuz he planned a last min trip to where his dad lives and we just moved from and made an appt with his old addiction counselor. Well, during Thanksgiving, with my folks there (I havent told anyone he was drinking again except 2 people who asked me and my best friend) I broke emotionally a little because he told me he was going for 5 nights, staying in a hotel, and hadn't even told anyone he was going. All I could think was that he was going to drink himself dead in this hotel room across the country and I lost it.
I hate this reality. I am so tore up right now.
Thanks for letting me vent. I may go back to al anon at some point. I am working on making sure I am set up to leave him. I feel like it's inevitable at this moment. I may be jumping to the worst case imaginable, but I can't do it again. So hard. It was the worst time of my life, and I have my kids to take care of.
Oh, my bad, he cancelled his trip bc I was upset. Whether or not he actually would have made it to the counselor, I have no idea. But there is zero chance he is going to one where we live now. It's not even in his thoughts at all. Full blown denial. Quicklike.
I honestly don't know what I'd do if this happened. I've never seen my AH sober for more than 59 days. To enjoy 3.5 years of "normality" ..... to finally be able to relax and be happy.....and then to have it jerked away.
Alcoholics are crazy, selfish, self destructive people. I just don't get it.
I am so sorry this happened- it's my worst fear. My husband currently has a bit over a year and a half sober now. I don't even want to imagine the sadness and anger, confusion and frustration you're currently experiencing. Not only from the relapse but the refusal to get back into therapy and get back on the wagon. I know you and I both know that the faster he gets help- the better it will be for everyone involved. But while he's refusing to get the help he needs? I think you are absolutely correct to seek your own support whether here, through al anon or however else and to get your ducks in a row to leave both for yourself and for your children who of course need and deserve your protection and peace in their little lives. I'm so deeply sorry for what you're experiencing my heart breaks for you!
I’m SO sorry to hear this. I agree with the others that yes, maybe you should start preparing for the separation. I have 2 small kids and know the day I make him leave, which I believe will happen, will be to protect them and their innocence. There’s no good that will come to them seeing their dad slur and stumble his way through the day, the weekend, the week. Peace and strength to us all!
Thanks ladies. I guess I knew there was always a chance it could happen. I signed up for online counseling and came straight to support in these groups, so I guess maybe at least I don't feel as lost as I could. I laid it out there for him in a pretty straight forward way. He isn't off the deep end. He could end up there, but I keep reminding myself if that happens,.thats his decision and there is nothing I can do about it, so I am going to just let the cards fall where they may. We have had a few Frank conversations about things, and our marriage isn't really amazing and hasn't been for a long time. Theres a lot of things that each of us have to work on. So I am going to own up to my bads and I signed up for counseling to start working on myself. Because no matter what, I have a lot of things to work thru. I told my husband I was going to counseling and I cant stay if he wants to drink. I dont want to and I can't. And the kids can't either. And then I just said fuck it and I read him something I put on sober recovery 4 years ago. It was a pretty descriptive post about his downward spiral and how terrible it was to go thru it. He didn't even realize it was about him at first. I think it shocked him a little. I would have never been able to share that with him all those years ago. So, I guess all things considered, I am remaining calm, and taking things one day at a time. And I will just keep repeating that to myself when I need to hear it. Thanks for taking the time to comment and to hear my post. Have a good night.
i hope and pray all your dreams come true , after this hell you desrve it,its crueler still , because you thought you had it beat, damn sorry for you on that. be well, get some therapy ,meditate..it helps!much love
