he tried to play it off. He walked straight to the back bedroom to use the bathroom. He came back with minty fresh breath I could smell on the other side of the sectional. I just looked at him thinking, "you're drunk", or "are you drunk?", or "maybe you're not drunk"....guessing, second guessing...over and over until he asked why I was looking at him like that. I said it was because he is drunk. He said he wasn't. I told him I'm tired of second guessing my gut and I know he is indeed drunk. He lied again. So I rephrased it asking if he drank tonight. He answered he did have a few drinks. DUH!!!! I told him that it is unacceptable, started to cry and left the room. I've been holed up in my room every since.
I'm going to have to ask him to leave tomorrow until further notice. I would ask him tonight but he was drunk and I don't think its right to ask that and put lives in jeopardy on the roads. Pray that I have strength to follow through or everything I've said to him will mean nothing. Everything I believe in will mean nothing.
He tried AA for maybe 3 months. I don't think he ever had any intention of staying in AA. I think he did it long enough he thought I was softened up and then he quit saying he "isn't like those people". Whatever.
Katie - in the middle of the first trip to detox my husband kept telling me how he was going to have a celebratory cocktail when he got out! And he did just that as soon as he got home. Didn't care that it tore me apart to see all hope slip away again. Alcohol addiction is so devious, it alters the brain. Alcoholics do not think rationally on any level. So hard for us to understand, we see what is happening but they just don't.
Your husband doesn't see that he is just like the others at AA, the alcohol has given him the liberty to think that he isn't.
You do have to follow through on what you've told him are your stipulations or boundaries . I wish I had, so many times I told him what those were but didn't follow through. Maybe if I had, maybe he would have worked harder at getting sober.
I am i counseling...thank goodness! I'm so glad I have been a few times prior to this crisis. I can honestly say that this evening Im feeling pretty good even tho I haven't heard from him since noon and I haven't physically seen him since last night when he was drunk.
