Has anyone in this group seen their husband successfully recover or sustain sober recovery?
I ask because if you read my earlier post from two weeks ago, my husband has been going through one of his worse relapses in five years.
He went into the hospital for pancreatitis for 3 days, received recommendation for a psych consult and then had a minor freak out once he got home and couldn't park his car in our driveway because of the snow and had a breakdown, came into the house crying, shaved his head and beard and then did some weird voodoo to his prescription pain killers to make them more straight morphine. He was sober from the Saturday he came home until Tuesday when I saw the charges on our joint checking account at come in that he was at the bar. I moved all the money and then scheduled a transfer from the joint account Friday to my personal account to ensure he doesn't spend all of his money on booze while i am out of town this weekend.
He tried going to the hospital Tuesday night for a psych consult, they put him in a room and didn't have anyone consult with him. He evidently threw enough of a fit where the doc visited him, and released him. He says he has something set up for later, but since he is an alcoholic and lies, i'm not sure.
So basically, I am just wondering if there are those among us in this group who can share the light at the end of the tunnel. I know it may not be there for each of us, but has it happened?
I dont hate my husband -- if anything the extreme amount of love we have for one another has gotten us through this much, but I do fear from reading some of what other share that I will grow to hate him and have shared as much with him.
Of course I am sad and disappointed. But am looking for some light.
I'm so sorry for your frustrations. I wonder too if it does get better ever. I have many friends in my church that have quit drugs and alcohol for many many years, but I don't know how extreme they were since I didn't know them before they got clean & sober. My husband was sober for 12 years, but has been drunk again for a year now. I say drunk because he drinks daily, the most he has gone without in the past year is maybe 3 days apart. But far and long in between. I also had to close my account so he can't waste away my money after he goes thru his. I believe in Christ and His delivering power, I know it can happen, but that person has to be willing. The waiting is the hard part. Do any of your AHs know that you are on this support group? I was just wondering because I haven't told mine about it, because this is my personal release, I also want to refer a friend but I don't want her to know my name on here, is that wrong? I think she could benefit from everyones input and comments.
Laucoa - hang in there, if he doesn't get better, you will, I think we know how much we can take and when is the time to walk away.
In my experience, and it is the only experience I have, my husband has increasingly gotten worse with each cycle and level of drinking. Mind you he has always drank, sometimes only on weekends (early years) to everyday over the past 7+ years, he has had occasional days of non-drinking, but usually following a binge. He continues to cycle in severity, also looking for any and all excuses to drink. Honey, I don't have the magical answer, if I did I wouldn't be in my situation which is worse after 17 years. Good luck to you, HUGS!!
