Hi everyone - I'm needing encouragement, positive thoughts, advise and courage!
I finally went to a divorce attorney a couple of weeks ago and spoke to my husband about it last week. I knew he wasn't going to take it well, but I wasn't expecting how low he is willing to go. First, he said he wouldn't sign the papers. That he would drag it out in court forever. He wants us to stay together until our 10-year-old is old enough to move out (this is because he doesn't work and I pay all his bills).
Then, he said that he'd get half of everything - half of my paycheck, half of my retirement, half of the house equity, half of our personal property, etc. (We live in a community property state so some of this is expected, except for the paycheck part.) He plans to go for alimony (which he ABSOLUTELY doesn't deserve) and is demanding custody of our daughter. And because he can't afford to live in this state (because he needs a free ride), he would move back home and take her with him.
Along with that, he threatened to bring up things from the past that are completely unrelated to the divorce. I keep thinking of him as the Big Bad Wolf - that he's going to huff and puff until he can blow my house (ego/emotions) down.
After that conversation, I felt defeated. I felt it was hopeless. I felt that I was stuck in a marriage, stuck in a house, stuck with a person that I don't love anymore.
Since then, I've regained some strength. I've been trying to think positively and not get hung up on his threats. I've tried to believe in myself. I'm planning to push forward. I have an appointment with another attorney in just over a week. I'm going to lay everything out for her and see what she recommends. I'm nervous, but freedom from him is very motivating!
The biggest fear I have is about our daughter. She absolutely needs to be with me. He can be very convincing and he does his research. I need strength and courage to beat him at his own game!
I was given the advice to find the best Family Law Attorney I could. This should be someone that is passionate about doing what is in the best interest of you child, not a cut-throat lawyer who is trying to gauge the other parent. I completely relate to the fear of your children being in an unsafe place. I am struggling with that too. My attorney, suggested that I not speak with my alcoholic wife about the divorce, if they are being irrational. Most of what they spout as truth, will only be the things they want, or think they deserve, but have no basis in reality of what will happen. I hope you are able to stay strong! Know that there are others experiencing exactly what you are. We will all survive this.

This you felt the children were at risk anything that has happened
In the past that could effect your job or health.
It's hard but showing the paths they take with alcoholism will
Be their down fall.
Hugs and prayer
naezer, sending you strength and encouragement to continue forward with your plan. Remember that when push comes to shove the alcoholic will use every means possible to manipulate you and they are so good at the word slinging. He's going to try every trick that's worked in the past and probably come up with some new ones. Try not to react, that only adds fuel to the fire.
Neazer - Ginny is right. An alcoholic is a mastermind manipulator. I am going through the same thing. I am divorcing my AH and he is trying to convince me that I am partially to blame for the divorce (which yes - I have to take some of the responsibility of our demise), but he doesn't think he has done anything wrong and will not accept any of the blame. His stories get better and better (he is the victim although HE cheated on me) and how he rationalizes everything is just incredible. Talk to an attorney. Don't let him bully you - that is what he is doing.
Oh yes, I'm going through this with my ex-boyfriend as well. He used to take ownership for his drinking and how it contributed to the downfall of our relationship when it was in HIS best interests and when he thought he could manipulate me using this fake "vulnerability and honesty." But now that it's totally over (if you've been following my story, I'm evicting him and he's finally moving out this weekend) he denies his drinking problem and blames everything on me and my mom and dad.
I think admitting his problems and how he ruined this relationship would crush his ego. I think he's a certified narcissist too.
