H has been drunk since Wednesday evening only sobering up enough to get himself to the liquor store for more booze. I have been running around juggling work, school, and homework while trying to get my som where he needs to be and cooking cleaning and everything else in the house. All while H lays passed out in the chair in front of the television. I want to scream. I hate living like this but I am trapped here for now. It is so hard to do all of this by myself and then I think that this is pretty much going to be my life from here on in because at some point, whether he drinks himself to death or I can finally get it together and leave, I am going to be on my own anyway. I am so sad and angry for myself and my kids....and when I look at him in that chair I just want to shake him. I know that it would do nothing but I am just so frustrated. I know this is all going to end badly and there really is not much I can do about it. I can't believe that I am 46 years old and I have let myself get into a mess like this. Thank you as always for listening....I don't really have anyone to talk to who understands and somedays I just have a hard time coping and seeing any bright side.
You didn't "let yourself get into a mess like this". You had no way of knowing 20 years ago that your AH would choose alcohol over his family. Nor did I. If I had known what was coming I never would have signed on to this horrible deal. Our feelings and needs don't matter in these relationships. The AH is so self absorbed they have no clue how abandoned and alone we feel. They just don't care. Early on in our relationship he treated me so well that I fell madly in love with him. Now he ignores me most of the time. I have to choose my words carefully in order to not start a fight or say something that he would take offense to. They are miserable lost in their addiction and take their frustrations out on whoever is available namely their family. Really sucks for us.....
Thank you for responding....it is just so hard to keep trying so hard to move forward when you have someone who just doesn't care and does nothing. I am working today so I am distracted from the horror at home. H appears to have gone to work as well, but I don't trust anything so who knows what he is up to, really. I hope that you have a good day today :)
You too. Your situation is more difficult than mine and I really feel for you. His children are grown and I do not have any so it is just the two of us with occasional visits from the grand kids. It is such a lonely feeling when the man you love just seems to love alcohol more than anything or anyone in the world. Some days I feel like an utter fool for not seeing the red flags early on in our relationship. Guess I thought that if I loved him enough it would conquer all. That didn't work. My plan now is to stop trying to change him and to build a life for myself. Doing everything I can to emotionally detach which is really hard. That is what everyone on this forum says to do. So much easier said than done...
Oh, it IS so much easier said than done isn't it! You can't change them only they can change themselves, but the hard part is they have to want to change. It is so frustrating.
I ignored the red flags too....I truly never imagined it would get this bad and I was young and in love. I do think that at this point if it weren't for my kids, I would leave. It would be hard but I don't really get anything out of our relationship anymore other than financial support. It is so sad because my husband was a good man before alcohol. He is just a shell now. It is heartbreaking and I am so tired. Hugs.
