So I thought this was pretty funny. Last weekend my daughter's boyfriend was over. He has been to our house maybe a handful of times cuz he lives 50 miles away. He had got a haircut and I made a comment about how nice he looked. My daughter was giving him some crap about it and said she preferred longer hair on him. We laughed and talked about some guys that I dated back in the 80's with mullets. Then we got on the subject of how her dad (my stbx) had curly hair when we met. Then my daughter said "Ya, and my dad used to be skinny too." Her boyfriends response was "Then he found the High Life." I was laughing SOO hard. That is my stbx's beer of choice and ALL he drinks. Not to mention there are CASES of it throughout the house. I am just glad other people see his problem - other people who don't know or even see him much. I think when the divorce is final people will know WHY we got the divorce, except his enabling family. They of course see me as the problem. Just an FYI - stbx has put on 75 lbs since we married. He has the 'beer gut.' Another good one (I won't tell the whole story) but we were sitting at dinner the other night and my daughter pretty much told her dad how lazy he is. Again I was LMAO!
I'm glad that you all are relaxed enough to find the humor -- kudos to you all! I hope to be in the position to do that one day.
When my AH put down the crown for a few months, he lost the red, bloated look. He shed pounds without trying and he looked younger. I just rolled my eyes when his family couldn't get over how great he looked, how fit and young and asked, "what are you doing? I want to try it". Whatever. Bless their hearts, all these years they've never known the hell in this house.
Last Feb my brother-in-law got married in Vegas. Stbx's family all went out for the wedding. In June we attended another family wedding and they (stbx's family) were all reminiscing about Vegas and how my stbx was at a poker table so polluted he was playing on his knees and how he was ordering drinks, but the family would get to the waitress and tell her to make him virgin drinks. They were all laughing and talking about how funny it was, blah blah blah. As I sit there thinking "And you people don't see a problem?" You think this is funny? Of course they don't see it like me and the kids do every weekend, but come on. Where ever he goes he has 'The High Life.' I don't think people notice that is ALL he drinks. At the dinner table we drink milk - not stbx. He has a beer.... I did point it out to one of his friends a while back and said 'do you ever see stbx drinking anything but beer?' The friend thought about it for a minute and said "you're right."
Yeah, its amazing how people cover for them and refuse to see the damage they leave in their wake. My AH's family, they don't know because they've never seen an alcoholic before. My husband defies what is typical when it comes to his addiction; no one in his family has ever drank or seen a family member ever drink. If Leave it to Beaver where about a real family it would be about his. They have their faults but they are good and pure folks who don't drink, smoke, curse, or watch bad movies. They are a dying breed. So, where my husband gets this, I have no idea.
