My husband started group counseling the week of Thanksgiving. He started drinking again last week and hasn't stopped. He still goes to group. I'm so frustrated and over it. I'm upset he is gone 11 hours a week to get help but it's not helping and I'm stuck with all the responsibilities. I know it's a start stop and start again. The fight is very real and im struggling tonight.
My husband did this too. He was in outpatient therapy from 8:30-Noon. By 12:30 he was back here at the house with a cocktail in hand. It made me so mad!
If I were you, I'd let the counselors know on the down-low that he's drinking again. He's wasting his time and theirs as long as he's actively drinking.
What's your husband's payoff in all of this? That he "successfully" completes rehab, so that gets to be his narrative? All that's going to do is aid his denial.
- Been there, still doing that!!!
I'm sorry you're struggling. This alcoholism thing is the worst beast I've ever been up against. I'm sending you prayers and hugs!
my husband and i were getting investigated by DFACS,,,and he was still drinking, and we had a counselor coming to the house, the situation was so touchy we were told if he drank we , (kids and myself ) needed to leave, the report was from (yet ANOTHER) police report of domestic assault. And with every situation he learns to take the therapy and twist it and aim it to MY BEHAVIOUR,,until recently it always worked ,now,,,i wait for him to start and as i am in recovery now,and have quit even smoking cigarettes,,i tell him" you can keep all that, we aren't questioning your behaviours,,yet your still using?????.....we are QUESTIONING MINE?? im in recovery, i am not judging you this is all coming from a place of i have been there, dude,,and we are returning to talk about me???..nah,,dont start that it doesn't work on me anymore, i know me, im aware of my intentions im sober, im working onthis everyday,...knowing how upset and freaked out , you make me the moment you start to drink, the state im in??..no i think we should talk about this , about the booze, about your behavior..not mine" annnnnnnnd, if hes drinking gave i have to stop, to shut up, and the more i shut up, the more i keep my mouth shut, the more his arrogance and cockiness come to the top, the pressure builds, and i feel myself trying to hate him, but i know , that willnot be god for me,, and again i work to find compassion for him,i do however recognize, that i can have compassion for him from a distance and i dream of it ,like a fatasy, every other minute, because the other minute is reserved for the real world and my children and getting an education and keeping my wits so i can survive until he becomes sober, which seems more and more fleeting or,i achieve that life i see on my horizon.I WILL BE RID OF ADDICTION IN MY DAY TO DAY LIFE,IN MY HOME,,THIS IS A DEFINITIVE , A SURE THING,,LIKE THE SUN, AND THE WIND. THIS I KNOW.
My husband did the same exact thing. Although he was mandated by the courts to do counseling from his 1st DUI he said he appreciates the group counseling. He even took the initiative to do one on one counseling. Then to my discovery he was still drinking. I wouldnt be suprised if my narcissist husband only like counseling because it gave him a spotlight and some what of an excuse why hes drinking. Statistical has shown from time to time only a VERY low number of alcoholics recover. If anyone ever asked my advise about their alcoholic spouse I would say start planning your exit because it's never going to get better.
