I ran into this on the web somehow and am scratching my chin in recognition here....since Mr. Wonderful can go on a binge at the drop of a hat after days or weeks of sobriety, the shoe seems to fit. Caused by childhood trauma, etc. etc. Well, he was raped by teenagers when he was around 8 - he was raised in an orphanage. My usual hard-assed stance: Get over it. My own childhood would make most people's hair stand on end. My siblings and I grew into responsible, hard working, successful and loving persons. We got over it. At least most of it.
While on a binge, he turns into a frightening personality that I don't know. Maniacal eyes that make me shudder. Total 180 from Mr. Fit 'n Trim doing his exercises and indulging in his self-righteous lectures to me about eating more fiber and fruits. Horse puckey. All alcoholics are totally self-absorbed while indulging, all or most are in denial. They are psychological (and often physical) bullies who try to wear us down by their excuses but, of course, as we all know, bullies are all cowards at heart. That's why the name calling. It's their only defense, second to only denial.
Finances have kept me from leaving but someday...oh, someday. This is not how I want to live out my golden years.
Totally with you, fallingstarr--my therapist and I were talking about that only this week: what makes it so that some people take a rough time and go, "Hot DAMN! I'm good! I rose above this!" and others say, "OHHHHHHHH pooorrr meeeee."
No one knows. Weird, my psychologist and I were talking about this last week as well. DID fits the bill with my husband as well. I always want to tell him to put on his big girl pants and deal!
I'll take a guess at it. Because it has to be built into you, taught to you, or learned that if you suck it up and face it you can get through it. If I think about my husband, he makes everything worse by wanting to soften the blow somehow--drinking, blaming, deflection, accusation--everything except an honest critique, then feeling and experiencing all the stuff that goes along with life bing crappy and unfair sometimes.
But, I figure, he's not the only one who needs to be honest with himself. I am not happy, I get nothing out of my time with him except feeling pretty bad at the end of the day. I had a rough life, too. Haven't I learned anything from it?
What I'm heading for in this thread is not just observing a personality change but a totally _different_ person taking over the host. Dual personalities. Cases like this do exist. I was thinking of calling his shrink to tell her my thoughts but hesitate to rock the boat. He's more relaxed with women psychiatrists, and she seems pretty good so far. We'll see. His background fits the picture. The male shrink he was seeing previously (who was totally useless and kept increasing his Prozac dosage) said that he suffered PTSD, which seems logical, but I think it goes much deeper. The personality that takes over during his episodes is downright evil.
The therapist doesn't know.
