Alcoholism and grief

Hi, I’m currently residing in Vancouver. My husband is an alcoholic. He’s been like this since our daughter died. We both were in grief for the first year. Gradually I overcame but, he couldn’t. He says he drinks to get over her thoughts. I know his pain. I’ve been through the same. If he continues like this, I’m sure I will lose him too. I’m getting very much concerned over this. It was her second death anniversary yesterday. He promised me that he would stay sober for the day but, he couldn’t. I think he needs help. I don’t think he can stop this by himself. My aunt suggested trying alcohol treatment from a clinic in Vancouver. I don’t know anything about such psychological treatments. Does anyone here have any experience in such procedures? Please share your wisdom with me. I really don’t want to chain him up or drug him and make him numb. Any suggestion and advice would be a great help. Thank you in advance.

Drugs don't make you numb if you take the right ones. My AH is on a drug now and it keeps him from having anxiety attacks (the reason he drinks). Your husband needs to believe he has a problem before he accepts help and even then it's a very long and rocky road because alcohol is easy, holding a mirror to yourself is hard. Look into the treatment program and see what other options you have. Sorry for your loss but know you aren't alone. Xxx

Forgot to mention that my AH slid into his alcoholic decent when his father passed away and he found him the next day. He used alcohol to avoid dealing with his grief. Took us four years and a lot of struggle to get where we are.

People drink for many reasons--and avoiding "feeling" (grief, sadness, etc) is one of them. If your husband WANTS to change, you're in luck. My AH had good success on Naltrexone, but you actually have to take it for it to work. You can lead a horse to water, as they say. Research it, and also watch "One Little Pill" on Amazon. I wish you the best of luck trying this route!
